This month, the Geebung RSL will host its annual sports luncheon, a highlight event in its long-standing support for Aspley Special School and Geebung Special School.

The luncheon includes a sports guest Q&A featuring former Queensland Bulls and Australian Representative cricketer Michael Kasprowicz, and Makenzie Weale, NRLW player for the North Queensland Cowboys.

Geebung RSL Chief Executive Officer Greg Hurley said the RSL had supported the two schools with the sports luncheon initiative for over 15 years as part of its commitment to local catchment area schools and the Geebung RSL School Liaison Program.

“The sports lunch is a public event, so all members of the community are most welcome to attend,” he said.

“On approaching both Michael Kasprowicz and Makenzie Weale to be our sporting guest speakers this year, without hesitation, they immediately committed themselves to the event to help raise understanding and awareness of the Geebung and Aspley Special School students and donated personal items of memorabilia to raise much-needed funds for both schools via the sports lunch live action on the day.”

Commitment to supporting local schools

Aaron Sheppard, Principal of Geebung Special School, said the event illustrated the Geebung RSL’s long-term commitment to supporting local schools.

“It is a fantastic opportunity to connect with members of our local community and to celebrate our school and the achievements of our students,” he said.

“A particular highlight of the event is the performance of the joint choir of Aspley and Geebung Special School. The students spend many weeks preparing for the performance and their performance never disappoints on the day.”

Aspley Special School Principal Chesleigh Hargreaves agreed that listening to the choir perform was a highlight.

“The atmosphere in the room on the day is breathtaking and the support of those attending, including the Ladies Auxiliary, is greatly appreciated by our students,” he said.

The money raised from the event will help both schools with projects aimed at student engagement, with Geebung Special School planning for a multisensory room and Aspley Special School purchasing outdoor musical sensory equipment.

“Because the items are costly, we purchase a few items each year as we slowly but surely build to having a virtual orchestra around our school,” Mr Hargreaves said.

Tickets are $90 each or $850 for a table of 10 and include a three-course lunch, complimentary drinks, raffles and auctions. To purchase, go to www.geebungrsl.com.au, call 3265 3711, email events@geebungrsl.com.au, or visit reception.
