Computers 4 Learning (C4L), a local not-for-profit organisation, is bridging the digital divide by refurbishing unwanted computers and providing them at low cost to those in need.
They were recently awarded a Kedron-Wavell Community Grant of $7,500 to further their initiative, Diggers Go Digital, aimed at supporting ex-servicemen and women.
Grants manager Janet Robinson said C4L recognised the contribution of veterans and wanted to support them as much as possible.
“We did some digging (no pun intended) and found that 53% of ex-serving veterans are aged 65 and over,” Janet said. “And of course, unlike today’s youth, computers were certainly not a part of their growing up.
“Meanwhile, many of the support services they are likely to rely on, such as Veteran Affairs, are increasingly being provided online. So regardless of their circumstances, all ex-service members are being corralled into the digital age or risk being socially disconnected.”
Support for Veterans and Community Involvement
To support veterans, C4L will make a free desktop bundle available to those without their own computers.
“While undertaking our research for the Diggers Go Digital initiative, we found that although many in the 65 and over age group have mobile phones, desktop computers are preferred when it comes to accessing services,” Janet said.
C4L has approximately 60 donated desktop computers to refurbish for this initiative, which is expected to launch early next year.
Janet said grants like the Kedron-Wavell Community Grants were invaluable because they gave small not-for-profits like C4L an opportunity to pilot new initiatives and purchase goods and services to help them carry out their work.
“The grant will allow us to purchase parts such as new solid-state drives and WiFi adaptors to refurbish the desktop computers that have been donated to us and make them available for free,” she said.
C4L operates from a 40ft shipping container at Earnshaw State College in Banyo but is currently seeking an alternative home.
“If anyone has a space that would be suitable, please let us know,” Janet said.
She added that C4L is always seeking donations of laptops and computers. They also welcome new volunteers, particularly those with skills in social media, volunteer coordination, or those interested in being the organisation’s new treasurer.
As a new school year approaches, Janet also suggested families in need of affordable laptops consider purchasing a device from C4L.
