“In the early 1860s, Queensland’s new colonial government hurriedly ordered a mental asylum to be built at Woogaroo,” he said. “Another asylum for the poor and chronically ill was set up on Stradbroke Island. None of the staff understood the problems they would face.”

Discover the Real Wild West at Chermside Library

Dr Scott Craig

Join historian and lecturer Dr Scott Craig as he discusses ‘The Real Wild West: Myths vs Reality on the American Frontier’ at Chermside Library.

Hosted by Platform Lifelong Learning, the seminar will be held from 12pm to 1pm on Friday, 27 March.

Dr Craig said most of what we think we know about the American frontier comes from entertainment, not history.

“This talk separates myth from reality in a fun, accessible way,” Dr Craig said. “The Wild West wasn’t just cowboys and shootouts – it was a place of cultural collision, survival, and storytelling that still shapes how we see the past today.

“History becomes powerful when we question the stories we’ve inherited. This seminar shows how the ‘Wild West’ was carefully constructed – and why that matters in how we understand the past.”
