There is something comforting about a good Italian meal. Not just because it tastes delicious, but because it often feels familiar, generous and uncomplicated in the best possible way. A bowl of pasta, a slow-cooked sauce, a few beautiful ingredients brought together with care are proof that great food does not have to be fussy to be memorable.
That is one of the reasons Italian cooking has such enduring appeal. At its heart, it is built on a simple idea: use good ingredients, respect them, and do not overcomplicate the process. In many traditional Italian kitchens, cooking has never been about showing off. It has been about feeding people well, making the most of what is in season and creating dishes that bring everyone to the table.
Some of Italy’s most loved meals come from humble beginnings. Think of a slow-cooked ragu simmering away for hours, or a simple pasta dish made with just a few ingredients that somehow tastes far greater than the sum of its parts. Rather than relying on long ingredient lists, Italian food often depends on technique, patience and quality produce.
Daniel Strange, owner of Ombra Italian in Chermside, says that philosophy still guides the way he cooks today. “Years of training, travelling and experimenting taught me a lot, but the biggest lesson was simple: good food doesn’t need to be complicated, just honest,” he says.
Why Simple Ingredients Create Memorable Italian Meals

Seasonal ingredients also play a big role in authentic Italian cooking. When tomatoes are ripe, herbs are fragrant and produce is at its best, there is little need to hide it under heavy sauces or too many competing flavours. The focus shifts to letting each ingredient shine.
Slow cooking is another part of that simplicity. While it may take time, it does not have to be difficult. A gently simmered sauce or braised meat can create rich, layered flavour without needing complicated steps. It is less about doing more and more about allowing good ingredients the time they need.
For home cooks, there is something reassuring in that. “People often think great food has to be elaborate, but often it’s the simplest dishes that are the hardest to get right and the most rewarding to eat,” Daniel says.
Perhaps that is the real secret behind Italian food’s lasting charm. It reminds us that memorable meals are not always the most extravagant. Sometimes, they are simply the ones made with care, shared with others and allowed to speak for themselves.
As Daniel puts it, “Great food is a lot like love. It doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to be real.”
