Brisbane Netball Association (BNA) is making significant strides in its support of boys netball, with its inaugural boys team celebrating success at the recent Junior State Age (JSA) Championships.

The team finished second at the championships held in July at the Downey Park Netball Association in Windsor.

BNA boys netball coach, Rob Hopper, said the boys had a fantastic competition, winning all but one game.

“We finished tied on points and missed out on first by goal difference,” Rob said.

“We had a friendly rivalry with the Pine Rivers Netball Association Boys team, with us winning one game each in the carnival leading up to JSA and this was the match the boys were looking forward to at JSA.

“The boys went out on court and played the best game of netball they had played all season and we came away victorious, both teams showing great sportsmanship and friendship once the game had been completed.”

Growing Interest in Boys Netball and Future Plans

The introduction of a boys’ team has sparked a marked increase in interest in boys’ netball at BNA.

“The program we run and our continued development of this program offers the boys a great starting point to their netball careers as well as continued development for the seasoned players already playing in our club competition,” Rob said.

This month, BNA will launch a summer development program for senior and junior boys. The program aims to establish two teams for both the Junior and Senior State Age Championships in 2025.

“This will help boys that are new to the sport develop an interest and skill level into the sport, as well as push our already seasoned boys to step up and develop their skill levels and game knowledge before our selection process for the representative season,” Rob said.

Co-captain, Jai Kelly, who plays in the positions of goal shooter, goalkeeper and goal defence, said he enjoyed playing netball because he loved how he could learn the values of teamwork, communication and support.

“Boys should join their local netball team because it provides them with an opportunity to engage in regular physical activity, their leadership skills within the club, and also that everyone is a valuable player on and off the bench,” Jai said.
