Music aficionados are in for a treat as the Brisbane City Pops Orchestra is presenting its latest concert, Britain and Beyond, this month.

The concert, to be hosted by St Paschal’s Catholic Church at Wavell Heights, promises a diverse repertoire spanning marches, musicals, classics, folk songs and pop hits.

Events coordinator and vice president of the Brisbane City Pops Orchestra, Rita West, said Britain and Beyond would be a show full of familiar tunes that audiences would know and love, with something for everyone.

“By popular choice from the artistic committee, of which I coordinate, we feel visiting Britain and Beyond allows us scope to play music from our extensive library, touching down on a journey through Britain and beyond,” Rita said.

“We will be making a short trip to Germany as we showcase one of Ron Hanmer’s favourite arrangements, our original conductor of 18 years until his passing in 1995. This he penned especially for our orchestra and features some of Offenbach’s most loved music, concluding with the exciting and highly-spirited Can-Can Oo-La-La.”

Among the concert’s standout selections are Eric Coates’ renowned Knightsbridge March and Trevor Duncan’s A Little Suite, famously used as the theme for the television series, Dr Finlay’s Casebook.

The orchestra will also perform the enchanting melodies of Alan Jay Lerner’s musical, Camelot, transporting the audience to a mystical English castle.

The journey through musical traditions continues with Ron Hanmer’s arrangement, Scottish Patrol, based on well-known Scottish tunes. Not forgetting pop music enthusiasts, the concert will also feature a medley of hits from The Beatles.

Adding to the event’s charm, guest artists from the Our Lady of the Angels school choir, conducted by Debra Todhunter, will join the orchestra on stage.

Rita said the Brisbane City Pops Orchestra, established in 1973, was one of Brisbane’s most popular community orchestras. She encouraged audiences to join them at St Paschal’s Catholic Church to enjoy their fifth concert for this year.

“The BCPO had a milestone celebration, 50 years of fine music, just last year in 2023, performing nine concerts with each and every concert being a sold-out performance,” she said.

Tickets are $35 (including afternoon tea). Book your tickets here or call 3359 0239.
