A Voice For Our Seniors

The National Seniors Association (NSA) Australia is a not-for-profit organisation, supporting Australians over 55 years of age – and there’s a branch on our doorstep in Chermside.

The Chermside NSA aims to provide advocacy and campaigns for the rights of seniors, as well as offering many benefits such as discounts from various organisations.

Formed in 1992 by local Everald Compton, the Chermside NSA now has over 60 members, with 16 current members being part of the association since its inception.

Chermside NSA president Jenny Tidey OAM said the association had met at Chermside Bowls Club for 26 years and would soon be moving to the Geebung RSL.

“It was formed for over-50’s to advocate for better outcomes in several areas – age discrimination, housing, pensions, poverty, health costs, aged care facilities, as well as any needs of our older community,” she said.

Jenny said Chermside NSA was excited to move to the Geebung RSL this month and welcomed new members to join them at their new location.

“Our Chermside branch gives members of the NSA the opportunity to meet and socialise with other members of our community,” she said. “We have a social meeting on the third Thursday of every month from January to November at 10am.

“Our members are looking forward to our move to Geebung and happy to be on the train and bus route. They are also looking forward to the extra benefits Geebung can offer.”

Chermside NSA secretary Beris Wilson said she encouraged people to join the association to meet people of a similar age, be entertained and enjoy outings together.

“Chermside NSA is encouraging residents from the local area to join and enjoy a monthly meeting with morning tea and entertainment for $10,” she said.

The NSA also has a three-monthly online magazine, Our Generation, to keep members up-to-date with news that may be of interest to the senior community.

Jenny said they would love to embrace new members to join the club.

“More members equals more friendships, more friendships equals more enjoyment,” she said.
