Gear up for a groovy night of mystery and music when UpStage Theatre debuts its inaugural performance, Murder on Record.

On Saturday, 24 August boogie on down to the Banyo Bowls Club for an interactive murder mystery dinner and show that promises to be a blast from the past.

President and founder Virginia Gray said Murder on Record was a fun-filled production set in a record production company in the seventies.

“The audience watches the story unfold and then questions the actors to try and guess who did it and why,” Virginia said. “Prizes are also given for best costume and team name – and who can resist those platforms teamed with a great pair of flares?”

Community and Creativity Shine

Murder on Record by UpStage Theatre

Virginia, who has performed in community productions both in Australia and overseas, founded UpStage Theatre after searching for a theatre group that was closer to her home. Starting with just six people, the group has now grown into a community of more than 150 members.

“I have a lot of theatre friends and love how diverse theatre groups are,” Virginia said. “We want this to be an all-inclusive community group that nurtures all skills and values that people have to offer.

“We couldn’t do this without the support of places like the (Banyo) library and bowls club.”

Murder on Record, written by Moreton Bay theatre creative Angela Witcher, is directed by Virginia with a production team that includes Gordon Heath, Greg Goriss and Dee Waugh.

Virginia said the cast, including comedian and improv master Gareth Macready as the MC, had been fabulous sourcing props and costumes.

“My cast are definitely stars,” she said. “I feel so blessed and spoiled to have so much talent and support.

“As well as being immensely talented and experienced performers, they all have such tremendous enthusiasm. People are guaranteed an enjoyable and entertaining night.”

Looking ahead, Virginia said UpStage Theatre had plans to perform a musical, as well as showcase Queensland writers.

“Planning is underway for next year and we hope to start announcing our programme soon,” she said.
