Grant Burge Wine Dinner Promises Elegant Night Out 

Wine lovers are invited to an exclusive Grant Burge Wine Dinner at Aspley Hornets this month. 

Aspley Hornets sales and events manager, Victoria Ahearn, said guests were in for a treat on Friday, 4 July, with an evening of indulgence, elegance and exceptional flavours. 

“Guests will enjoy a carefully curated five-course degustation menu, each dish thoughtfully paired with a premium wine from the renowned Grant Burge collection,” Victoria said. 

“Crafted by expert chefs, the menu is designed to enhance and complement every pour, offering a unique culinary experience that celebrates the art of food and wine pairing.”

Accordion Talent Takes to the Stage

Don’t miss an afternoon of talented accordionists performing many musical styles at Accordions in Concert at Kedron-Wavell on 13 July. 

The concert marks the official launch of the Queensland branch of the Accordion Society Australia (ASA). 

Nerida Farmer, President ASA Qld Subcommittee, said the accordion was “such a versatile instrument – so expressive and technically demanding.” 

“For accordion lovers and those who are curious about what this instrument can do, this concert is a must-see,” Nerida said. 

Performers include accordion trio Fisarmonica Amici, the QLD accordion ensemble, former Australian champion accordionist Bradley Voltz, button accordionist, jazz musician and composer John Reeves, Brazilian-born piano accordionist Ricardo Bona, and Australia’s rising star of the Irish music scene Jack Meimaris. The concert starts at 2pm.

Brisbane Hustlers Host Trivia Night Fundraiser

Join the Brisbane Hustlers RUFC for a night of fun and friendly competition at their Trivia Night on 12 July, at Norths Rugby Club, Wavell Heights. 

Brisbane Hustlers president Steve Bevan said there would be lots of laughs for everyone. 

“Our trivia night is our largest fundraiser of the year, raising funds to help get our gay and inclusive rugby team to the Purchas Cup, an Australasian Gay and Inclusive Rugby tournament, which is being held in Auckland this September,” Steve said. 

He added that they were looking for more players ahead of next year’s Bingham Cup.   

“The Bingham Cup is the world cup for gay and inclusive rugby teams and also the largest amateur rugby tournament in the world,” he said. 

The bar opens at 6pm. Trivia starts at 7pm. First prize is $1000.

Horror Book Launch: Lost in the Catacombs 

This Friday, 13 June, a thrilling evening awaits at The Royal Hotel in Nundah with Lost in the Catacombs: A Camilleri Collaboration – an 18+ horror-themed book launch. 

The event celebrates the release of Leyla Camilleri’s short story collection, Nexus Events. From 6pm to 10pm, guests will experience a fusion of local talent featuring painted and photographed pieces, live entertainment from Sellma Soul, Turpentine and Dominiq Tricks and a live reading from Leyla, with music by Mucis Productions. 

The nine creatives exhibiting art specifically for the launch will donate separate pieces towards a raffle, with first-prize winnings valued at over $300. Free food, a private bar and facilities are also included.

Nundah Walks for Mental Health 

The Rotary Club of Nundah will host its first LIFT THE LID WALK for Mental Health on Sunday, 15 June, starting at 9am at the Nundah Criterium Circuit. 

Inspired by mental health advocate Vicki Stewart, who launched the original event in Mooloolaba, the initiative has raised over $470,000 for Australian Rotary Health. 

“The fundraising is vital… but at this point in time, it is so much more important to have the conversation and break down the social stigma of mental health, as it affects so many people,” Vicki said. 

Entry is $30, with free registration for kids 15 and under. 

“It’s never been more important for us to play a role in supporting mental health in our local communities than it is right now,” said event committee member Terry Ryan.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, 28 June, as Do Dance Academy celebrates 20 years with a special concert at Aspley State High School. 

Assistant Principal Do Dance Academy Meg Michalski said it would be “an exciting evening out to see the history of Do Dance Academy and the students who are here today.” 

The concert will feature two performances, at 2pm and 6pm, showcasing renditions of routines from the past 19 years. 

“This concert is super special to us as we’re taking a trip down memory lane to celebrate 20 years of Do Dance Academy,” Meg said. “We have some exciting things planned, including the return of some OG students!”

Mirusia Marks Milestone with Celebration Concert 

Join acclaimed soprano Mirusia at Kedron-Wavell on 25 May for Celebration — a journey through the music of her life. 

Mirusia said she was looking forward to reconnecting with the Kedron-Wavell audience again, but this time, in a personal and reflective way. 

“The Celebration tour is really a love letter to the incredible career I’ve been so fortunate to have so far from those early performances with André Rieu to standing centre stage with my own orchestra and now, returning to songs that shaped my life,” she said.

“It’s emotional, honestly! There’s something really special about singing pieces that have stayed with me and, I hope, with the audience through all the different chapters of my career. I’m excited to share the stories behind the songs too and sharing this milestone birthday with my audience.”

Celebrate May the Fourth in True Jedi Style 

May the Fourth be with brew! Don’t miss the Star Wars-themed extravaganza at Happy Valley Brewing Company in Stafford this Sunday, 4 May.   

Owner Cheyne Meehan said the event would feature 16 Star Wars-themed beers on tap, trivia, live music and prizes for fans dressed as their favourite Star Wars characters.  

“This is fast becoming one of our favourite events of the year,” Cheyne said. “We love seeing our customers get into the spirit, whether it’s through the trivia battle, creative costumes, or just enjoying a pint of something inspired by the galaxy far, far away.”

Jumanji Hits the Big Screen at Free Outdoor Cinema

Experience movie magic under the stars when Jumanji hits the big screen this month.  

Brisbane City Council’s free Outdoor Cinema in the Suburbs returns to 7th Brigade Park in Chermside on Saturday, 17 May.  

“There’s nothing better than getting out and enjoying our fantastic outdoor lifestyle with free and affordable activities in our community,” Marchant Ward Councillor Danita Parry said. 

From 3.30pm, kids can enjoy face painting and activities with Sparky Do Dah before the movie begins at 5.30pm. Pack your chairs and blanket, and grab a bite from the food trucks on-site. The event is pet-friendly and perfect for an afternoon out.

Support Local at VEND Virginia’s First Bite Night 

VEND Virginia is excited to host its first-ever Bite Night Street Food Pop Up Night on Saturday, 5 April, from 4pm to 8.30pm. 

A spokesperson from VEND said they were thrilled to finally bring the Bite Market to VEND Virginia after having to postpone due to Cyclone Alfred. 

“The impact of the cyclone was felt deeply, especially by small businesses, so this event is a great reminder of the importance of supporting local,” the spokesperson said. 

“On the night, we’ll have an incredible selection of food trucks, stalls and retail vendors from Brisbane and beyond, offering delicious dinner, snack and dessert options, as well as a fantastic range of shopping opportunities.”

Crack Open Easter Fun At Aspley Hornets 

Hop into Aspley Hornets this Easter for a fun-filled Egg Hunt and Craft event.  

On Saturday, 12 April, bring the kids for an arty, crafty, Easter-eggy experience, where they might even meet the Easter Bunny! There are two sessions to choose from: 12pm to 1pm, or 1pm to 2pm. 

Aspley Hornets Sales and Events Manager Victoria Ahearn said the kids would love hunting for Easter eggs hidden around the venue. 

“Before the hunt, join us for a variety of fun, hands-on craft activities where children can make their own festive creations to take home,” she said. “It’s a perfect way to celebrate the season with games, arts and a whole lot of Easter fun. Trivia Night Turns Up the Volume for Women’s Day

Celebrate International Women’s Day on Saturday, 8 March, with an 80s-style Charity Music Trivia Night at Aspley Hornets, supporting Zonta Club of Northside Inc.  

Aspley Hornets general manager and Zonta member, Danni Francis, said it was an important day to celebrate the work Zonta does for women and girls. 

“At a local community level, Zonta Northside has many community projects like our breast cushions, which we cut and sew to deliver to the Mater, St Vincent’s and Prince Charles to help support women and women with breast cancer,” Danni said. “At an international level, we pack birthing kits annually to support women in third world countries who have no access to a hospital or medical intervention when giving birth.” 

Funds raised from the trivia night will help double birthing kits and support Zonta’s education bursary and Young Women in Business Awards.  

“Please join us for a fun night and know your time and money is going towards a great cause helping women in our local community,” Danni said.

Following the success of last year’s show, Tune In, Turn On, Drop Out is returning to Club Chermside for A Night of Flower Power 60s Music.  

On Saturday, 29 March, the six-piece band will take to the stage to perform timeless hits from The Beatles, Cream, The Doors, The Animals, Bob Dylan, and more, from 7pm to 10pm.  

Lead vocalist of Tune In, Turn On, Drop Out, Jim Hansen, said the band loved playing great music from the psychedelic era of the mid to late sixties.  

“We formed the band because we all enjoy the music of our youth,” Jim said. “We all knew each other and had worked together in various bands over the years.”  

The audience is encouraged to dress in colourful sixties gear for the chance to win prizes.

Get Up, Stand Up for Bob Marley Tribute Show

Reggae lovers, don’t miss the return of Roaring Lion at The Royal Nundah for another night of Bob Marley magic.  

On Saturday, 15 March, the eight-piece tribute band will perform a three-hour celebration, playing hits like Could You Be Loved and Buffalo Soldier, kicking off at 8pm. 

Rhythm guitarist for Roaring Lion, Wayne Naera, said his love of Bob Marley’s music goes back to his teenage years.  

“Bob’s messages of Get Up, Stand Up, One Love, Natural Mystic, and Soul Rebel – to name a few – talks to my soul back then and still does today,” Wayne said.

Free Swinging Jazz Show at Park Performance

Brisbane City Council’s Bands in Parks: Sounds on the Green is a free, family-friendly event happening at Oxenford Park, Nundah. 

Swingalicious Big Band will perform music from Count Basie, Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Michael Buble and more on 9 February from 3pm to 5pm. 

Led by musical director Allan Head, the band features sections of saxophones, trumpets, trombones and a full rhythm section, accompanied by three vocalists. 

“Opportunities to bring our swinging takes on jazz and rhythm and blues to a local audience are appreciated by every member of our big band,” Allan said. 

“We are looking forward to bringing musical enjoyment to everyone at Oxenford Park. We’ll be mixing it up with some old favourites and some new tunes for 2025. Come along, tap your feet, sing or hum and say g’day!”

Swim with the Best at Hornets Sports Luncheon

 Australian Olympic gold and silver medal-winning swimmer, Cate Campbell, is the guest speaker at this month’s Sports Luncheon at Aspley Hornets. 

The annual event will take place on Friday, 14 February, with a three-course lunch, drinks, auctions and raffle prizes. 

Marketing coordinator Maddy Young said the Aspley Hornets Sports Luncheon was one of the most highly anticipated events of the year. 

“This special occasion brings together our valued sponsors, suppliers and the wider community for an afternoon of connection and inspiration,” Maddy said. 

“This year, we are thrilled to welcome Cate Campbell as our guest speaker. Her remarkable achievements in sport align perfectly with our mission to become a Women and Girls Chartered Club, making her presence both timely and inspiring as we champion greater inclusivity and empowerment in sports.” 

The event will be hosted by Evan Bancroft, featuring a preview of the upcoming footy season, a keynote address and a Q&A.
