Local Winners in the QLD Day All the Best Awards
Two local businesses have taken top honours in the Queensland Day All the Best Awards, earning recognition as the best in the state in their respective categories. Rode Meats at Stafford Heights was named Queensland’s Best Butcher, while Farmhouse in Kedron claimed the title of Best Café. The team at Rode Meats thanked customers for their support on Facebook. Farmhouse also celebrated the win on social media, saying: “This award belongs to our amazing team and to all of you who continue to support us, visit us, and share the love.”
Community Housing Planned for Zillmere
A new community housing project is set to deliver 16 homes in Zillmere following a partnership between Brisbane City Council and Housing for Change to redevelop surplus land. The project will see 3000 square metres at 39 Jennings Street transformed into sustainable community housing for northside residents. Housing for Change will oversee planning approvals and project delivery, while Council will cover survey and development application costs associated with the subdivision. Modular construction methods will be used to help fast-track completion of the homes.
Ponytail Project
Geebung RSL marketing manager Holly Murfitt is preparing to say goodbye to her ponytail as she takes part in the Ponytail Project to raise funds for Cancer Council Queensland. As part of the fundraiser, Holly will donate her hair to help create wigs for people undergoing cancer treatment. Funds raised through the campaign will support cancer research, prevention programs and support services across Queensland.

Hickey Park Playground Upgrade
Brisbane City Council has announced that Hickey Park in Stafford is receiving a brand-new playground in an improved location, plus new pathways and a shade structure to make the space safer, more accessible and more comfortable for families.
Marchant Ward Councillor Danita Parry said she was excited to see work underway on the upgrade. “Hickey Park is a much-loved little spot for Stafford families, and this upgrade will make it even better,” she said. “A new playground, more shade and better pathways will make a real difference for children, parents and carers who use this park.”
The playground is expected to be completed in July, weather pending.
Fresh Paint Art Club
Artist Meeghan Nation will host an eight-week Fresh Paint Art Club at The Backdoor Studio in Chermside West from 16 July to 3 September. Held on Thursdays from 10am to 12pm, the course is open to all skill levels and will guide participants through a range of techniques, styles and mediums to create a finished artwork to take home. All materials are supplied, along with morning tea, tea and coffee at each session. Places are limited.
Get Freezin’ For A Reason – Polar Plunge Brisbane
The Brisbane 2026 Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunge will be held on Sunday, 12 July at the Chermside Aquatic Centre, starting at 9am. The event raises funds for Queensland Special Olympics athletes heading to the National Games in Victoria later this year. Part of a nationwide series held across Australia in July and August, the Polar Plunge sees participants jump or run into cold water to raise money for Special Olympics Australia. Registration is $30, with funds supporting athletes and programs.
Chermside National Seniors
Chermside National Seniors group meets on the third Thursday of each month in the Newman Room at Geebung RSL. The venue has on-site parking and nearby regular bus and train services, as well as a café and restaurant. The social meetings include a guest speaker, morning tea, and a lucky door ticket for $10. Meetings are 9.30am for a 10am start. Visitors are welcome to attend for free for their first meeting and stay for a coffee, chat or lunch after the meeting. On other Thursdays, members enjoy day bus tours, lunches at various Northside cafés, movie outings and coffee catch-ups. The group also hold two ‘Bring & Buy Handmade’ cooking and craft fundraising stalls throughout the year and an end-of-year Christmas luncheon. They also enjoy a day trip for Christmas in July.

Second busiest library in Brisbane: Chermside Library!
Chermside Library has recorded 373,959 visits between July 2025 and March 2026, making it the second most visited of Brisbane’s 33 libraries during the period. Brisbane Square Library ranked first overall, followed by Chermside Library and Garden City Library.
Councillor Danita Parry said Chermside Library’s strong visitor numbers showed just how important the library is to the local community.
“Chermside Library is always busy, and that says a lot about the role it plays in our local area,” she said. “People are there borrowing books, studying, bringing children to activities, using computers, attending workshops or simply finding a quiet place to sit. It’s wonderful to see so many residents making the most of such a valued community space.”
Bromeliad and Tropical Plant Sale Coming to Wavell Heights
The Bromeliad Society of Queensland will host a Bromeliad and Tropical Plants pop-up sale on Saturday, 25 July from 8am to 12pm at Wavell Heights Community Hall on Edinburgh Castle Road, Wavell Heights. There will be a wide selection of plants suited to gardens, indoors, courtyards or balconies. Admission is free.

Healthy and Active Classes Return to Chermside
Brisbane City Council’s Healthy and Active classes at Burnie Brae Hall, 60 Kuran Street, Chermside, will return this month. Chair Pilates will resume on Tuesday, 14 July, followed by Chair Zumba on Wednesday, 15 July. Both classes run from 7am to 8am and will continue through to mid-June 2027, excluding school and public holidays.

Matcha and Ceramic Painting Workshop
A beginner-friendly Matcha and Ceramic Painting Workshop will take place on Saturday, 25 July, at the Burnie Brae Community Centre from 10am to 12pm. Kedron State High School 70 Year Celebration
Kedron State High School will celebrate its 70th anniversary with an alumni reunion event on Thursday, 18 June, from 4pm to 7pm. Former students will have the opportunity to reconnect with classmates, view a special alumni display, purchase commemorative merchandise and book a guided tour of the school grounds. The celebration will run alongside the school’s expo for families interested in learning more about the school.

The Chermside and Districts Historical Society will host an open day on Saturday, 6 June, from 2pm to 4pm, followed by a general meeting on Sunday, 7 June, at the same time. All are welcome. Aspley VIEW Club
Aspley VIEW Club, formed in 1994, has grown to become the largest VIEW Club in Australia with 200 members supporting 25 Learning for Life students and other Smith Family appeals. Keith Boden Wetlands Works Underway
Rehabilitation works are scheduled to begin at the Keith Boden Wetlands at Shaw Park, with temporary detours and traffic control measures in place for pedestrians and cyclists during construction. The project will include the use of a floating excavator to remove built-up sediment from the wetland. Sediment will be safely contained, dewatered and transported offsite to a licensed facility as part of approved permit conditions. Minor retaining wall repairs along the wetland edge are also planned.

The Gunyah Lapidary Club in Wavell Heights welcomes new members year-round, whether they are a complete beginner or an experienced lapidarist. Kedron Named Brisbane’s Top ‘K’ Suburb
Kedron has been voted Brisbane’s number one suburb starting with ‘K’ in a recent poll run by ABC Brisbane, beating rival Kangaroo Point. Speaking to ABC Brisbane, Marchant Ward Councillor Danita Parry said the recognition was “well deserved”.
“Brisbane has recently been named the best place in the world to raise a family and Kedron is a prime example of a Brisbane suburb,” she said.
She added that the suburb has “great lifestyle offerings and obviously the natural amenity – Kedron was named after the Kedron Brook” and offers “fantastic schools, cafes and parks…it’s got everything in one spot and 8ks from the city.”
Monthly Connection Walks in West Chermside
Broken to Brilliant will host its monthly connection walk on Saturday, 13 June in West Chermside. The group meets at 7am at Routine Espresso and Wine Bar on Ainsdale Street before walking along Downfall Creek to Milne Hill, with options for a flat or more challenging route. The walk returns around 8am for a cuppa and chat. Participants are advised that the Milne Hill section is not suitable for prams, though a pram circuit option is available.
Free Dance Cardio Session in Stafford
Dance Cardio in the Park will be held at The Community Place on Teevan Street, Stafford, on Saturday, 27 June, from 8am to 9am. The free, low-impact dance fitness class is suitable for all ages and fitness levels, featuring easy-to-follow routines designed for beginners, active seniors and anyone seeking a fun, friendly workout. Tech Lessons Help Seniors Get Connected
Burnie Brae is offering personalised one-on-one technology lessons for seniors in their Activity Room on 60 Kuran Street, Chermside. The hour-long sessions help participants build confidence using smartphones, tablets, laptops, smartwatches and other devices, with support for video calls, emails, social media, online shopping, internet banking, apps and internet safety. Lessons are held Tuesdays from 1.30pm to 3.30pm, Wednesdays from 9am to 3pm, and Fridays from 9am to 3pm. Cost is $5 per lesson for members.

World Wellness Group hosts a free Multicultural Seniors Social Group at Chermside Library on the fourth Monday of each month from 1pm to 3pm. By-Election for Seat of Stafford
A state by-election has been called for the electorate of Stafford. Around 41,000 local voters will head to the polls on Saturday, 16 May, to elect a new Member of Parliament. At the time of print, the Australian Labor Party had endorsed Luke Richmond as its candidate, while the Liberal National Party had confirmed Fiona Hammond as its candidate, with further nominations expected ahead of the 24 April deadline.
Voters will have several options to cast their ballot, including early voting from 5–15 May (from 8am to 6pm on weekdays only), postal voting, and election day polling booths across the electorate. The Stafford electorate covers suburbs including Chermside, Kedron, Stafford, Stafford Heights, Newmarket and surrounding areas. Residents are encouraged to check their enrolment details and confirm their electorate ahead of the vote.

Zonta Seeks Mother’s Day Donations
The Zonta Club of Northside Inc. is collecting new dressing gowns for its “Spread the Warmth” campaign, supporting mothers in shelters this Mother’s Day. Donations can be made at Aspley Hornets or the Bracken Ridge Ward office. The club also donates handmade breast cushions to local hospitals to assist patients recovering from breast cancer surgery, with a volunteer cutting and stuffing day set for 2pm on Sunday, 17 May at Aspley Hornets.

Geebung Treasure Trove Offers Bargain Finds
The Treasure Trove at Geebung is one of two Brisbane ‘Treasure Trove’ locations helping residents access affordable furniture, fashion and everyday essentials, with items such as bikes from $20, lounges from $200, and bedroom and dining sets from $60. Operated by the Endeavour Foundation, all proceeds support people living with disability. Items can be donated at resource recovery centres in Chandler, Ferny Grove, Nudgee and Willawong before being sent to Treasure Troves in Geebung at 27A Prosperity Place and Acacia Ridge. The stores are open on weekends from 8am to 4pm.
Haunted History Tour Returns to Nundah Cemetery
The next Nundah Cemetery Haunted History Tour, presented by Jack Sim, will be held on Saturday, 8 May. The 1.5-hour tour will explore stories from the area’s past, including the earliest graves, the house by the cemetery, a child ghost, a ghost ship and a medical fraudster.

The community initiative encourages residents to repair items rather than throw them away, helping reduce waste and save money during a time of rising living costs. Many everyday items that might otherwise end up in kerbside collection can often be fixed and used again.

Fresh Paint Workshops is running an eight-week beginner art course from 23 April to 11 June at Fresh Paint Art Club in Chermside. Classes are on Thursdays from 10am to 12pm, covering six paintings using a variety of mediums and techniques. Council’s Suburban Renewal Plan for Chermside
Brisbane City Council has announced a new Suburban Renewal Precinct Plan aimed at accelerating residential development in Chermside, located near jobs, transport, shopping, and services. The plan will focus on the Gympie Road corridor, from Rode Road to 7th Brigade Park. The project will begin with community consultation to inform draft plans, followed by another round of feedback from local residents.
Marchant Ward Councillor Danita Parry said Chermside was a thriving suburban hub and that it made sense to plan for its future growth now. “We’ll be working closely with the local community as we work through what the future of the centre should look like,” Cr Parry said.
Nundah Cemetery Haunted History Tour
A haunted history ghost tour will take place at Nundah Cemetery on Friday, 13 March, led by Historic Australia. The 1.5-hour guided tour will explore stories from the cemetery’s past, including its earliest graves, reports of a child ghost, and the tale of a medical fraudster. Major Mixed-Use Development Proposed for Kedron
A development application has been lodged to transform the former Top Taste Bakery site at 30 Glentanna Street and 474A Gympie Road, Kedron, into a large-scale mixed-use precinct named Bakery Square.

Council Funds Solar Upgrades for Community Facilities
Nearly $937,000 will be shared by community clubs, men’s sheds, and sports facilities through stage 2 of Brisbane City Council’s Community Facility Solar and Energy Efficiency Program.
The upgrades, scheduled for this financial year, include solar panels, new heat pumps for hot water, and lighting control systems.

Drainage Works at Carseldine Village

Brisbane City Council’s kerbside collection service is returning to local suburbs this month. Residents in Geebung will have their collection begin the week commencing 27 October. Aspley is scheduled for the week of 1 November, with Wavell Heights and Nundah on 10 November, Stafford, Stafford Heights, and Kedron on 17 November, and Chermside and Carseldine on 24 November. Residents can dispose of acceptable items, such as furniture, white goods, electronic waste, small appliances, bicycles, and wood products under 1.5 cubic metres. Unacceptable items, including car parts, tyres, garden waste, glass, hazardous materials, and general rubbish, will not be collected.

Setting Boundaries Without Guilt is a one-hour session that will explore why boundaries are tough for many, the beliefs behind guilt, and offer tools to build confidence in setting boundaries. Community Planting Event in Aspley
The Rainbow Lorikeet Park Bushcare (RLPB) group is holding a community planting event on Sunday, 28 September at 10am, at Rainbow Lorikeet Park, Aspley, in conjunction with Brisbane Inner North Lions Club. The aim of the day is to plant approximately 700 natives into pre-drilled holes. The Lions Club will be cooking a sausage sizzle to feed the participants.

Chermside parkrun Celebrates 10 Years
Last month, Chermside parkrun marked its 10th anniversary with a superhero-themed celebration at 7th Brigade Park. The event honoured the volunteers, community members, and locals who have helped make the weekly 5km run a success over the past decade. Participants joined in the fun with a walk, run, or stroll through the park, and plenty of cake to celebrate the milestone.
Citywide Green Bin Rollout Continues
Brisbane City Council is continuing its citywide rollout of green waste recycling bins to eligible households, with deliveries scheduled progressively through to December. In Geebung, residents should have already received their bins. Wavell Heights households can expect delivery by 5 September. Further deliveries are planned for the following suburbs:
- Chermside: from 29 September
- Kedron: from 6 October
- Carseldine: from 13 October
- Aspley: from 20 October
- Stafford: from 24 November

Walking for Pleasure
Walking for Pleasure is a social walking group offering a fun and social way to stay active. Originally established by Brisbane City Council, the group became an independent, volunteer-run, not-for-profit organisation in 2002. Open to all ages, the group hosts walks across various Brisbane suburbs including Chermside, Albany Creek, Sandgate, Stafford, Petrie and more.
Aspley Orchid Society Monthly Meetings
Aspley Orchid Society Inc invites you to come along and see what orchid growing is all about. They hold two meetings a month, which include a guest speaker.
- Night meeting: First Thursday, 7.30pm-9.30pm
- Day meeting: Third Thursday, 9.30am-11.30am
The meetings take place at Wavell Heights Community Hall, 175 Edinburgh Castle Road, Wavell Heights. Join them for a chat over morning tea or supper. Volunteers Needed for Kedron Brook Bushcare
The Gilbert Road Bushcare Group is calling for volunteers to help restore native vegetation along Kedron Brook, starting west of the Gilbert Road bridge. Monthly working bees are usually held on the fourth Sunday of the month, but the next session is set for Saturday, 24 August, from 8am to 10am. Volunteers can join the group at the end of Jean Street, Grange, for weeding and planting activities.

PCYC Zillmere Hosts Open Day and Free Teen Bootcamp
PCYC Zillmere is inviting the local community to come together for a day of fun and connection at their upcoming Open Day on Saturday, 12 July. The event will take place from 10am to 1pm at the PCYC facility on Zillmere Road.
The Open Day will showcase the centre’s programs and services, giving visitors the chance to explore the venue, meet the team and try out a range of activities. Highlights include a basketball competition, face painting, a jumping castle, sausage sizzle, a raffle draw and more.

National Tree Day Planting Returns to 7th Brigade Park
The Rainbow Lorikeet Bushcare Group (RLPB) is once again rolling up their sleeves to celebrate National Tree Day, with a new planting site set to be established at 7th Brigade Park on Saturday, 27 July from 1pm to 3pm.
Building on the success of last year’s efforts, RLPB volunteers will prepare the site by weeding, digging holes, and spreading mulch to prevent invasive weeds. This year’s goal is to plant up to 500 native species endemic to the area. The event will conclude with a community sausage sizzle. Residents are encouraged to come along, get their hands dirty, and be part of this important environmental initiative.

Let’s Talk Diabetes at Burnie Brae
Burnie Brae will present Let’s Talk Diabetes on Wednesday, 16 July, featuring exercise physiologist Sophie, who will discuss healthy habits for preventing and managing diabetes.
In addition, diabetes information booths will be available in the Members Lounge on Monday 14, Thursday 17, and Friday 18 July. Attendees can access helpful resources, speak with team members, and take a Type 2 Diabetes risk quiz.

Nundah By Night Fiesta Twilight Market Rescheduled
After last month’s rain washed out the planned event, the Nundah By Night Fiesta Twilight Market has been rescheduled for Saturday, 19 July, from 4pm to 10pm, on Station Street, Nundah. The markets will feature over 120 stalls, gourmet food, pop-up bars with traditional Gluhwein, live music on two stages, and roaming performers, including stilt walkers and Brazilian dancers. Entry is $3.
My Remarkable Self
The popular Confidence and Friendship course, run by My Remarkable Self, is back at Grange Community Hall for Term 3, running from 24 July to 18 September. Designed for girls in grades 4 to 6, the program offers a fun, supportive space to build self-esteem and confidence.
Sessions run Thursdays from 3.30pm to 4.30pm and cost $200. Spaces are limited and fill quickly.
Next Repair Cafe Stafford
If you’ve ever been frustrated by throwing away something that could be fixed, Repair Café Stafford is here to help. Held every second month, the café offers free repairs on a range of household items, including bikes, furniture, textiles, blades, electronics and computer hardware/software (excluding small appliances). Run by volunteers, the next event takes place on Saturday, 2 August, from 9:30am at 33 Teevan Street, Stafford. Bookings are essential.

Stepping Stone North’s Open Day
Member-based community organisation Stepping Stone North aims to address the serious impact of mental illness in a therapeutic and non-clinical environment and help people who are dedicated to rebuilding their lives. At the clubhouse, members participate in two work units – Nourish (kitchen and garden) and RAD (reception and administration). The clubhouse is hosting an Open Day on Thursday, 17 June from 10am to 2pm. There will be a tour of the clubhouse and a free sausage sizzle. The clubhouse is located on 88 Delaware Street, Chermside (7th Brigade Park).

Chermside National Seniors
Chermside National Seniors group holds a monthly meeting every third Thursday of the month at Geebung RSL, 323 Newman Rd Geebung. The social meetings have an interesting guest speaker and include morning tea and a lucky door ticket. On other Thursdays, members enjoy comfortable bus trips, lunches at various local cafes, BBQ’s and movie outings. The group also enjoys a day away for Christmas in July. The monthly meeting arrival time is 9.15am for a 10am start. On-site parking is readily available and nearby bus and train services are also convenient. New members and visitors are always welcome.

Craft Group Finds New Home
Friends Who Create, a local group dedicated to crafting for a cause, has settled into their new space at the Chermside Guides Hut, Lawley Street, Kedron. They meet every Friday from 9am, making handmade items for hospitals and charities, including baby quilts and burp cloths for premature babies, wheelie walker bags, fidget bands for dementia patients, and more.

In Loving Memory: William “Bill” Upton
We are saddened to share the passing of William Leslie Upton (Bill), who died peacefully in the early hours of Wednesday, 29 April. Bill was a cherished member of the community and was featured in a recent issue of the Chermside Guide, where he celebrated his 95th birthday at the Ridley Road Community Men’s Shed. He had a truly remarkable life and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Bill’s family and friends during this time.
