Join a celebration of cherished melodies in a concert that promises to stir memories and emotions.
St Paschal’s Catholic Church in Wavell Heights will once again be filled with music and meaning when the Brisbane City Pops Orchestra (BCPO) perform their newest program on Sunday, 24 August.
Meredith Cook, President and Events Coordinator of the BCPO, said the orchestra would be presenting a program titled Unforgettable.
“For the artistic committee, which selects the programs for each series, it was an opportunity to reflect on pieces of music which have been meaningful and memorable for various reasons,” Meredith said. “We all have pieces which have provided us with memories of a special event in our lives.”
Some of the pieces to be performed include The Sound of Music Medley, Yesterday, The Dam Busters March and the Schindler’s List Theme.
“St Paschal’s Church has been a regular performance venue for the orchestra over many years,” Meredith said. “The Gumnuts Choir from Our Lady of the Angels’ School always delight the audience with a special performance conducted by Debra Todhunter.
“At interval, a lovely afternoon tea is provided by the parish for the audience and musicians from the orchestra. This gives the audience a chance to engage with the orchestra members.”
A Passionate Community of Musicians
Unforgettable is part of four series of concerts the BCPO perform each year.
The BCPO is a community-based orchestra made up of around 50 musicians of all ages, who have been performing across Brisbane for 52 years.
Meredith said the orchestra welcomed players who were passionate about playing their instrument and sharing the enjoyment of music “by providing good-quality concerts, which feature well-known and popular music”.
“Music can connect all of us, regardless of our age or background,” she said.
Throughout the year, the orchestra works with three professional conductors – Chen Yang, Andrew Robinson – and Neil Flottmann, who will lead the Unforgettable concert.
“They bring the music to life, which creates wonderful musical experiences for the players and the audience alike,” Meredith said. “Everyone leaves with a feeling of great joy after attending a Brisbane City Pops Orchestra concert.”
