A major drainage upgrade aimed at improving flood protection in Chermside has been completed, enhancing the area’s resilience against severe weather.
The project, which involved a 310-metre stretch of high-capacity drainage along Hamilton Road between Gympie Road and Kelso Street, is designed to better manage intense downpours and reduce flood risk for local homes and businesses.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the upgrade was another practical, on-the-ground project that strengthened our suburbs and helped Brisbane stay safe each storm season.
“We can’t prevent flooding in Brisbane, but being prepared can make a huge difference,” he said.
“These upgrades boost the local stormwater network and help protect nearby homes and businesses during Brisbane’s intense rain.”
Improved Infrastructure and Local Effort
More than 1300 on-site hours were dedicated by local engineers, planners, and field crews to complete the project.
The new infrastructure increases the size and capacity of the underground stormwater system, allowing it to handle larger volumes of water during heavy rainfall. Crews installed larger drainage channels to facilitate the efficient movement of water, helping to alleviate pressure on the stormwater network and reduce flooding in vulnerable areas.
Acting Chair of the Infrastructure Committee and Councillor for Marchant Ward, Danita Parry, said, “Since March, our crews have done an incredible job, putting in more than 1300 hours of work so Chermside residents and businesses can bounce back faster after severe weather. Across Brisbane, we’re delivering the essential infrastructure that keeps people safe and keeps our city moving, no matter the forecast.”
