Getting behind the wheel for the first time can be daunting – for learner drivers and their supervisors. That’s why the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is inviting locals to a free workshop designed to support the important role of supervising a learner driver.
The Ready for the Road: Supervising a Learner Driver session is packed with practical advice, helpful tips and expert insights to make the journey from L-plates to P-plates safer and more successful. It’s aimed at anyone who will be sitting beside a learner as they log their driving hours, whether that’s parents, carers, older siblings or mentors.
A TMR spokesperson said the workshops aim to turn well-meaning supervisors into confident road safety partners.
“By giving supervisors practical tips and information, we’re helping them support learner drivers more effectively and, in turn, shaping a safer and more capable generation of drivers,” the spokesperson said.
Expert Guidance and Real-World Tools for Confident Supervision
The sessions provide guidance on how to support a learner’s development from day one.
“The sessions include common road rules and rules for young drivers under Queensland’s graduated licensing system,” the spokesperson said. “Other areas of focus are the risks learner drivers face, especially in the first year of solo driving, and how best to avoid them; strategies for providing calm and constructive feedback throughout the learning journey; how to prepare for a practical driving test when the time comes; and the opportunity to speak with road safety experts.”
Supervisors can sometimes pass on unsafe habits or attitudes without realising it.
“The Ready for the Road workshops give supervisors the opportunity to reflect on and refine their own driving behaviours before hitting the road with their learner driver,” the spokesperson said.
“One of the greatest gifts supervisors can give learner drivers is modelling safe behaviour themselves, including driving to the speed limit, using their seatbelt correctly and avoiding phone use.”
Whether you’re preparing to supervise for the first time or want a refresher, this practical and free session will give you the tools to help your learner become a confident and responsible driver.
