Two local businesses have been recognised at Brisbane City Council’s WasteSMART Brisbane Awards.
Love Me Again Market (LMAM) won the WasteSMART Circular Threads Award for promoting sustainable shopping, re-homing around 1,250 pre-loved items weekly across three market locations, including The Soul Pantry in Stafford.
Co-owner Isobel Dear said it was incredible to see the impact LMAM was having on the community.
“Winning the WasteSMART Circular Threads Award is such an honour,” Isobel said. “We are celebrating our five-year anniversary of business next year and this just feels like an amazing milestone to celebrate with such an accolade.”
LMAM also educates its 39,000+ social media followers on the benefits of reusing clothing and raises funds for BeyondDV through its ‘Charity Rack’.
Co-owner Lana Sciasci said winning the award “encourages us to continue our mission to encourage more fashion lovers to consider pre-loved before retail to give items a continuous new life outside of landfill.”
“We are so passionate about promoting circular fashion as a genuine replacement for retail shopping, spending your money within your community, buying pieces from other women in your community and keeping it in circulatory for as long as possible,” Lana said.
Little Birdie Hair Co: Leading Sustainability in Hairdressing
The WasteSMART Business Award went to Little Birdie Hair Co for its sustainability efforts, including opening a ShareWaste composting facility, recycling hair foils, donating hair clippings to community gardens and planting native trees with Carbon Positive Australia. The salon has four locations, including Stafford Road.
Tenille Lawrence, owner and founder of Little Birdie Hair Co, said winning the award was deeply personal.
“The salon was born from her own journey with chemical poisoning and the realisation that the industry needed a safer, more sustainable path forward,” Tenille said. “To be recognised for making a positive impact on both our clients’ health and the planet is incredibly rewarding.
“Sustainability has been at the heart of Little Birdie Hair Co from the very beginning. This award is not just a reflection of our commitment, but a reminder of how small changes in our industry can make a big difference.
“It’s a testament to our mission to lead the hairdressing industry towards a more sustainable future. We’re honoured to be recognised for creating an environment that prioritises low-tox, eco-friendly practices without compromising on quality or creativity.”
