Computers 4 Learning: Bridging the Digital Divide in Our Community

Access to a working computer can change a person’s future. It opens doors to education, job opportunities and social connection. But for many Queenslanders, the rising cost of technology makes that access difficult.

That’s where Computers 4 Learning (C4L) steps in.

Based on Brisbane’s northside, Computers 4 Learning is a local social enterprise with a clear mission: to make sure every Queenslander can take part in the digital world.

Who They Are

Computers 4 Learning is a registered charity and certified social enterprise. That means they operate like a business, but people and the planet come before profit.

All proceeds go straight back into the program — used to buy replacement parts, improve workshop tools and keep the organisation running. There are no paid positions; every task is carried out by volunteers.

The organisation began as a Rotary initiative called Computers 4 Kids. It later expanded to support adults too, becoming an incorporated association in its own right. Today, the name Computers 4 Learning reflects that broader community focus.

Their workshop is located at Earnshaw State College in Banyo, inside a set of modified shipping containers — a humble base for the impressive work happening each week.

Why Their Work Matters

Technology is essential for learning and connection. Without it, young people fall behind at school. Adults miss out on employment opportunities. And families lose access to vital online services.

Cost-of-living pressures only make things harder.

Computers 4 Learning steps into that gap by refurbishing donated devices and selling them at very affordable prices. Student laptops start from as little as $90, ensuring technology remains within reach for those who need it most.

Beyond affordability, C4L also plays a major role in sustainability. Last year alone, the team diverted more than 4.7 tonnes of e-waste from landfill by repairing and reusing devices — a win for both people and the planet.

How You Can Help

With awareness and demand increasing, the greatest challenge for C4L is not having enough devices to help our customers.

That’s why C4L is calling for more working laptops and desktops from individuals, schools, and especially corporate supporters. If your workplace upgrades technology, consider donating your retired devices instead of storing or recycling them.

One donation can help a student succeed and keep valuable materials out of landfill.

You can support C4L in several ways:

  • Donate unwanted laptops and desktops in working condition
  • Spread the word through schools, clubs and workplaces
  • Follow and share their posts on Facebook and LinkedIn
  • Volunteer your skills — tech or non-tech — everyone can help

Donation bins are located at several sites, including the Marchant Ward Office in Chermside.

Powered by Volunteers

Computers 4 Learning is run entirely by volunteers — around 30 to 35 at any given time.

Some are IT students gaining real-world experience. Others are retirees with a passion for giving back. There are volunteers with disabilities building confidence and skills, and new Australians learning to contribute in a supportive environment.

The diversity of the team is one of C4L’s greatest strengths. Many volunteers move into paid roles after developing new skills and workplace experience — a success the organisation proudly celebrates.

The group is guided by a dedicated management committee, including President Melynda Eaton and Head IT Advisor Adrian Eaton, who were inspired to carry the project forward so that all kids — not just their own — could access technology.

A Strong Future Ahead

Computers 4 Learning continues to grow, with a new website on the way to make donating and ordering even easier. Partnerships with schools and community organisations are expanding, and the team’s credibility and reach are strengthening every year.

Most importantly, lives are being changed — one refurbished computer at a time.

That’s real impact, happening right here in our community.
