This year marks the 125th anniversary of Chermside State School, and to honour its legacy, the Chermside & Districts Historical Society is hosting an afternoon of celebrations.
Taking place on Saturday, 5 July, the event invites past students and the wider community to reflect on the school’s rich history and the lasting impact it has had on the area.
Dr Bradley Scott, Chermside & Districts Historical Society archivist, said the connection to the school remains strong even after its closure and reflects on the many students who passed through its doors.
“Our headquarters is the original Chermside State School building, which was relocated here after the school closed, so we feel a special affinity with it,” Dr Scott said.
“Downfall Creek State School opened on 9 July 1900 with 54 pupils. It was located on the northwestern corner of Gympie and Rode Roads, where the Uniting Church now stands. When Downfall Creek was renamed Chermside in 1903, the school changed its name as well.
“Peak enrolment was in 1959, with 810 pupils. In its final decade, there were fewer than 100 students enrolled, and the school’s last day was 13 December 1996.”
Honouring the Past and Preserving the Memories
The afternoon promises plenty of nostalgia, with past students and locals invited to view historic photos of the school, share their own stories and memorabilia, and reconnect with a meaningful part of Chermside’s history.
Dr Scott said he was most excited about sharing the class photos with the community.
“We have an extensive collection, and past students love finding themselves in them,” he said.
Visitors will also be able to contribute their own memories and items, with a scanner available on the day.
“We would love to make copies of any photos that we don’t have,” Dr Scott said. “This includes class and general photos. I will be available to collect and type up any stories that people would like to add to our archives.”
The historical society hopes the celebration will encourage the community to reflect on the school’s role in local history and help preserve its legacy for future generations.
There is a small car park onsite, with more parking available at Kedron-Wavell RSL.
