After a few years’ hiatus, the much-loved cent auction hosted by the Geebung Zillmere Bald Hills Aspley Citizens Auxiliary is making a triumphant return.

The auction will be held on Sunday, 27 July at Geebung RSL, promising an afternoon of excitement, community spirit and plenty of prizes.

Citizens Auxiliary President Lynette Gill said this year’s event marked the first cent auction since the pandemic.

“We used to have a cent auction every year before COVID and that put a stop to everything,” Lyn said. “The cent auction is a fun day. A lot of work goes into it, but it is rewarding.”

For those unfamiliar with the format, the cent auction will involve placing tickets into buckets that correspond with various donated prizes, including sewing, knitting, crochet and cooking items. All prizes are donated by the auxiliary’s members and there will also be special raffles and bonus prizes on the day.

Entry is just $2, which includes tea and coffee and ticket sheets are available at three for $5. All funds raised go directly to the Citizens Auxiliary’s support of veterans’ health and welfare, as well as local initiatives like annual donations to special schools and the upkeep of Anzac memorial sites.

About the Citizens Auxiliary

The Citizens Auxiliary, made up entirely of volunteers, was founded in 1959 as the Women’s Auxiliary in a structure known as the ‘Hole in the Wall’. The group transitioned to the Citizens Auxiliary two years ago to welcome male members. Today, the auxiliary boasts five male and 19 female members, including 96-year-old Mickie, one of the original members. Lyn herself has served for more than 30 years and became a life member in 2014.

Beyond the cent auction, the auxiliary stays busy with a variety of community events. They host a monthly Hoy (card game) day at 10am on the second Tuesday of each month (entry $8, includes tea, coffee and biscuits), participate in mega raffles at the RSL every three weeks, and support Anzac and Remembrance Day events through badge sales and the Gunfire Breakfast. They also run a Melbourne Cup sweep and maintain a stall at the Geebung Street Party, selling homemade jams, chutneys and baked goods.

An annual sports lunch in partnership with Geebung RSL further supports Aspley and Geebung Special Schools.
