As the weather warms up and the days get longer, there’s no better time to think about harnessing the power of the sun to save money and reduce your carbon footprint.

Paul Thistleton, CEO of family-owned and operated local business Green Solar, said that living in Queensland offered plenty of opportunities to take advantage of solar energy.

“We are lucky to live in the Sunshine State,” Paul said. “Paired with solar, we can power our homes for free from the sun. Other parts of Australia would dream about making the power we make in winter in solar, however, summer is when we use air conditioning the most generally, when we have more sunlight.”

He said he founded Green Solar after a challenging experience working for a less reputable solar provider.

“At the time, I held the belief that a company could thrive by delivering quality service, offering trusted brands and maintaining fair pricing,” he said. “Twelve years later, I’m pleased to see that this commitment to integrity and value has proven successful.”

Top Tips for Going Solar with Confidence

His top tips for going green with solar include:

  • Buy the system that suits your needs, not just what the company sells as a package.
  • Research the company: Check reviews and see how long the company has been around. “Search for their worst reviews first,” Paul said. “A lot of companies flood their poor reviews with fake positive reviews.”
  • Choose a company that has its own installer, not just a contractor.
  • Choose a company that has an Electrical Contractors Licence, not just a sales company.
  • Don’t be sold on the marketing: “There are extremely young companies offering the world but failing to deliver,” he said. “Choose a company with a good, long-term history.”
  • Ask lots of questions: “Whilst it helps your understanding, it helps the company know that the solution they’ve provided is the right one for you,” Paul said.

Due to the ever-increasing cost of bills, Paul said more households and businesses were moving to solar and battery systems to take control of their expenses on their terms.

“We say people who buy solar from us own their power, rather than renting it,” he said.

“It also takes the guilt away from using the air conditioner as much. With electric cars becoming more popular, solar is a great way to fuel it for free in your own home.”
