Animal lovers will have a chance to experience the pawsitive impact of pet therapy this month, with two cuddly events – one for kittens and one for puppies.
From 2 to 15 December, the Cat Lounge inside Petaholic Aspley at Robinson Road Marketplace will host a Kitty Cuddles event, followed by a Puppy Cuddles event from 17 to 24 December. For just $5 entry, visitors can enjoy a therapeutic snuggle session with adorable kittens or playful puppies.
A spokesperson from Brisbane Pet Adoption, the organisers of these regular events, said scientists had proven that cuddling a pet for 10 minutes a day boosts mental health, reduces anxiety and stress, and lowers the risk of heart attack and stroke.
“Plus, who doesn’t love to cuddle a kitten or puppy?” the spokesperson said. “Cuddling pets releases oxytocin and dopamine, making you feel relaxed and stress-free. For $5, it’s the cheapest therapy in Brisbane!”
All proceeds from the events go towards feeding and caring for the animals, as well as supporting a selected charity each month, including mental health initiatives such as R U OK? Day.
Adopt with Care This Holiday Season
The events are not just a chance to experience the therapeutic benefits of pet interaction but also an opportunity to learn about proper pet care. Staff will be available to chat with participants about the responsibilities involved in adopting and looking after pets.
The kittens and puppies available for cuddles have been rescued from pounds or surrendered by their owners. They are vaccinated, wormed, flea-treated and desexed, ready for adoption into loving homes.
However, with Christmas around the corner, potential pet adopters are reminded to carefully consider the long-term commitment involved in pet ownership.
“Pets require time, care and attention,” a spokesperson said. “Puppies and kittens need ongoing training, socialisation and supervision.”
Giving a pet as a gift can be an exciting idea, but unfortunately, many pets are abandoned or surrendered shortly after the holiday season when new owners realise they are not fully prepared for the demands of pet ownership.
Before adopting, it’s essential to understand the responsibilities involved and ensure the decision is made with the welfare of the animal in mind.
Note: Children under 12 must be supervised by an adult at the cuddles events.
