Aspley State High School is dialling it back to the early 2000s for this year’s edition of A Factor, the popular student-led talent showcase.
On Friday, 24 October, the audience can expect a throwback party packed with iconic tunes and student talent that’s anything but outdated.
The theme was chosen by A Factor captains and Year 12 students Shanece and PJ.
“This year we felt inspired by the number of bands that signed up, both now and in previous years,” PJ said.
“A Factor has always had a strong ‘band vibe’ and we thought the 2000s would really appeal to both the performers and the audience.”
Shanece added that the 2000s vibe was making a comeback.
“The music and the style are both recirculating, and a lot of people our age love dressing in that era’s fashion,” she said. “It’s seen as a cool period, and that makes it easy for everyone to get involved and feel connected.”
Students take the lead in every part of the production, including behind the scenes, assisting with decorations, taking photos, selling tickets, sound and lighting, and even cooking and serving food in the canteen.
“A Factor really is a whole-school event, and it’s great to see the entire Aspley High community come together to make it happen,” Shanece said.
The Performances
Both captains will hit the stage with their own bands – Shanece with Melophobia and PJ with Son of Hades.
PJ said Son of Hades performed a cover at the heats, but they were still deciding what to play in the finale.
“We want to choose something that really lands,” he said.
Shanece said Melophobia played their first original song for the audition heat.
“We wanted to share it live for the first time, and it felt like the perfect opportunity,” she said. “For the finale, we’re still deciding – we want to make sure we get it right for our last performance.”
The captains will wrap up the night with a 2000s medley, including hits from artists like Green Day and Avril Lavigne. They said that they were both really excited about the performance.
“We’ve been part of A Factor for a few years now, and this feels like our last big ‘fun’ thing to do at school before exams kick in,” PJ said.
Tickets start at $5. Get tickets here.
