Two members of Aspley Classes for Seniors, a volunteer-run organisation for people over 50, have been recognised for their community contributions.
Chair Dr Rod Campbell was honoured with a Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia in 2018 for his service to education. This year, longstanding treasurer Dr Harley Juffs received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his extensive community service, including his involvement with Aspley Classes for Seniors.
Dr Campbell AM said the classes offered older people opportunities to mix with another group of friends.
“The social dimension of the classes is valued by the students,” he said. “The contribution of class attendance to physical and emotional well-being is also recognised by relevant research, and learning in older people contributes to maintenance and even improvement in cognitive function and memory.”
Last term, over 200 students enrolled in 20 different subject areas. Enrolments for Term 2 classes will be held on Wednesday, 23 April, at the Aspley Uniting Church.
Dr Juffs OAM said Mah Jong and line dancing were the most popular classes.
“Other subject areas are watercolours, languages, writing memoirs, reading, computers and other devices, craft and needlework, gentle yoga, cards and indoor bowls,” he said.
Aspley Classes for Seniors was established in 1995 by retired school headmaster Bill Bone, who saw a need for more learning opportunities for local retirees.
The program offers four seven-week terms annually, with most classes costing $25 per term.
