A night of laughter and cultural celebration awaits at the Comedy Cartel this June.

This star-studded event at Kedron-Wavell will bring together five stand-up comedians for a family-friendly show that blends humour, heritage and everyday hilarity in a way that’s set to have everyone in stitches.

Meet the Comedy Cartel Lineup

Leading the charge is Joe Avati, an Australian-born second-generation Italian known for his signature “ethnic comedy”.

“The audience will get not only a show with acts with over 100 years of stage time but will get an injection of youth coming through with their points of view as well,” Joe said. “It adds an element of freshness to the lineup for fans of us old guys.”

Joe’s routines, often centred on his culturally diverse upbringing, have gained him an international following. With more than 30 years of experience, Joe said he had honed his act to resonate with audiences regardless of background.

“What’s strange is that what makes me laugh is very different from my own content,” he said. “Thankfully, what also makes me laugh are very acute and accurate observations of everyday life and over the years I have included more and more of those types of gags in the show.”

Alongside Joe, the Comedy Cartel features an all-star lineup. George Kapiniaris, an Australian actor of Greek descent, is renowned for his role in the 90s sitcom Acropolis Now. Tahir, a Logie-award-winning actor and co-creator of StreetSmart and Here Come the Habibs, is best known for his role as Habib in the hit series Pizza and its motion picture adaptation Fat Pizza.

Joining them is Ethiopian-Australian comedian Joe White, the first Ethiopian comedian to sell out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Sri Lankan-born comedian and writer Sashi Perera rounds out the cast, drawing on her background as a refugee lawyer for her unique take on language and life.

With such a diverse and talented group of comedians, surely there’s bound to be plenty of backstage banter?

“Being ethnic, the number one topic of discussion, and this takes place immediately after sound check, is, ‘What are we going to have for dinner?” Joe said.

Tickets start at $69.90. Book your tickets here.
