The Reflex – The Australian Duran Duran Experience is gearing up for a national tour, with the first show in Nundah!
The Dancing on the Valentine tour will kick off at the Royal Hotel on Friday, 4 April, and fans can expect an unforgettable tribute to one of the most iconic bands of the 80s.
Honoring the Sound, Not the Look
Alex Arbuthnott, the band’s keyboardist, said he came up with the concept about ten years ago, inspired by his long-time love for Duran Duran’s music.
“The majority of the band are, first and foremost, big fans of the music,” Alex said.
“We’re all seasoned musicians, most of us working on multiple projects, and we have a strong work ethic when it comes to getting the sound right. Duran fans dance in our audience, knowing every single word and nuance of each song, so we deeply respect both them and the music.
“For us, it’s not about dressing up in costumes – it’s about truly paying tribute to great music and the fans.”
Joining Alex in the band are drummer Joe Muratore, bassist Garry Daglish, guitarist Phil Bowley, and John Kater, performing the lead vocals made famous by Simon Le Bon.
Alex said he and Garry were such big fans they knew the music “inside and out”.
“We spend hours listening to both recorded and live versions of their songs, carefully recreating the sounds as authentically as possible,” he said. “This even influences our choice of instruments.”
The band’s efforts haven’t gone unnoticed, with Alex saying many fans had approached them after the show and thanked them for staying true to the sound of Duran Duran.
“They tell us about the memories it brings back for them, and honestly, seeing the joy on their faces – and hearing the audience choirs every night – makes it all worthwhile,” he said.
He said his favourite song to perform live was Rio.
“Traditionally, it’s Duran Duran’s final encore,” he said. “The fans know this, so every show you can feel the tension build – people start yelling for it, then that first note hits and the crowd goes off!”
Alex said the band was very excited to start the tour at the Royal Hotel.
“We had a fabulous time in Brisbane last year – there are some die-hard “Duranies” up there!” he said. “Just FYI…the best audience choir we’ve had so far? Brisbane! So, we’re expecting them to bring it again!”
