Rainbow Lorikeet Park Bushcare group (RLPB) is inviting the Aspley community to come together this month in the spirit of environmental stewardship as they celebrate World Environment Day.
An event will be held on Sunday, 8 June, at Rainbow Lorikeet Park, featuring activities aimed at fostering a sense of ownership for the local environment.
RLPB leader Rob Jamieson said World Environment Day (5 June) was a global initiative that encouraged awareness and action for the protection of the environment. This year’s theme is Beat Plastic Pollution.
“We would like the Aspley and surrounding community to become active participants in protecting their local environment and enjoying the surroundings that the park offers,” Rob said.
Activities on the day include a wildlife show with an echidna, a nestbox presentation and inspection tool, a session from Council’s Litter Prevention Team, and a native bee hotel construction workshop.
Environmental initiative stalls will be set up along the park’s pathways leading to the central hub, with easy access from all six park entrances. A coffee van and sausage sizzle will be available for attendees to enjoy.
The day will be officially opened by Marchant Ward Councillor Danita Parry and is supported by Lions Brisbane Inner North and the Council Creek Catchment Program Team.
Rob said he hoped attendees would come away with a greater appreciation for the native birds and animals in the park and realise that we are the custodians of their environment.
“The community’s role is to protect their environment from further destruction and restore the habitat that has been neglected over time,” he said.
Since its launch in 2023, RLPB – a volunteer group under North Brisbane Catchments – has held monthly working bees and planted over 2800 native species along local creeks to minimise erosion and support native birdlife like the red-browed Finch, grey fantail and superb fairywren.
In September, the group also installed nestboxes at Rainbow Lorikeet Park and 7th Brigade Park to provide a safe space for native wildlife to rest and reproduce. One box is currently home to a pair of rainbow lorikeets. With inspections occurring only once or twice a year, the upcoming event offers a rare opportunity to observe their use.
“It is always pleasing to hear locals and visitors to Rainbow Lorikeet Park comment positively about the outcomes of our bushcare work,” Rob said.
