ANZAC Day provides an opportunity for Australians of all ages to reflect, remember and honour those who gave everything for our freedom.
This year, several local services will be held, inviting both serving and ex-serving defence personnel and the general public to participate.
Marchant Ward Councillor Danita Parry said on ANZAC Day, we pause to remember the courage, sacrifice and resilience of our service men and women.
“It’s inspiring to see more school students and their families joining us each year to carry forward these important traditions,” Cr Parry said.
Vietnam veteran and longstanding member of the Kedron-Wavell Sub Branch RSL, Gregory Peake OAM, said ANZAC Day was important for raising awareness of the sacrifices made by Australians.
“It reminds the veterans that people remember what ANZAC Day stands for,” Mr Peake said. “To me, ANZAC Day is every day because I have a list of all the names of the people in our unit who were killed in my diary, so I am reminded every day of the men who lost their lives.”
Mr Peake, who served in a Third Cavalry Regiment – an armoured corps unit, said it was heartening to see students from local primary and secondary schools attending the ANZAC Day service and seeing them pay their respects to past service men and women.
“I think it reinforces that the past deeds of service men and women are not forgotten,” he said.
