For many people, making the decision to move into a retirement community can feel overwhelming, but the Brisbane North Retirement Village & Resort Expo, coming to Kedron-Wavell this month, helps seniors and their families navigate their options and find just the right fit.

Dorothy Willoughby, one of the event organisers, said that the value of the expo lay in the wealth of information it provided to seniors.

“This event is devoted exclusively to showcasing a range of retirement communities from different locations, all under one roof,” Dorothy said. “This allows seniors and their families to discuss their preferences directly with representatives.”

As part of a national series that has been running for nearly 30 years, the Brisbane expo is sure to be a welcome opportunity for those considering downsizing.

“At every event, we have people thanking us for the information that they received,” Dorothy said. “It saves a lot of legwork for our visitors and gives them access to important information. We love what we do.”

The Benefits of Retirement Living

Dorothy explained that a common misconception about retirement living was that it was primarily a real estate investment.

“In reality, it is a lifestyle investment,” she said. “Retirement living offers far more than four walls and a roof. It is a way of life characterised by freedom, independence, and the companionship of one’s peer group.”

Dorothy added that retirement communities prioritise wellbeing by offering services and amenities that encourage residents to remain physically, socially and intellectually active for as long as possible.

“Retirement living is all about community,” she said. “We know that people who live in these communities go into aged care later than most people who live in their own homes because of the social interaction and physical activities offered within these communities.”

Dorothy said that the expo was a lovely, gentle event for retirees, and her advice for first-time visitors was simple – come prepared.

“I would suggest that attendees have a think about what is important to them and compile a list of questions that they would like to ask,” she said. “Selling the family home and relocating is a major financial decision that should not be taken lightly. However, doing your homework can lead to years of happiness.”
