Brisbane’s third annual Reptile Expo slithers into town this month, packed with educational seminars, live demonstrations and interactive experiences to delight fans of snakes, lizards and turtles.

The family-friendly event, hosted by Shikito’s Critters, promises an exciting weekend for reptile lovers on 26-27 April at the Northside Indoor Sports Centre in Zillmere.

Elizabeth Randall created Shikito’s Critters in 2019 to showcase her reptiles and amphibians. She founded the Brisbane Reptile Expo in 2023, with the support of fellow reptile keepers, as a space for enthusiasts to connect. The first expo, held at the Morayfield Sports and Event Centre, attracted over 5000 visitors.

“We had way more attendance than we thought,” Elizabeth said.

The expo’s popularity led to a decision to move it to the larger Northside Indoor Sports Centre for its second year. According to Elizabeth, the new venue allows for “a lot more breeders, a lot more reptiles and a lot more space”.

A highlight of the Brisbane Reptile Expo is the live demonstrations featuring different reptile species and correct handling techniques. Attendees will have the chance to get up close and personal with some of the animals and learn about their unique behaviours and characteristics. (Attendees are not permitted to handle the reptiles).

Vendors, Photo Ops & Special Quiet Session

Vendor booths will offer reptiles for sale, supplies to enhance or set up a habitat, and reptile-themed merchandise. This year’s vendors include Real Aussie Reptiles, Progressive Pythons Australia, Creepy Crawly Creations, Echo’s Lizard Land, Hatched Pet Supplies, Gondwana Geckos, Cool Vibes Reptiles, The Reptile Room QLD, Jurassic Wildlife, Snake Sanctum and many more.

There will be photo opportunities with different species of pythons and other reptiles, under the guidance of experienced handlers. The expo will also allow enthusiasts to meet breeders, experts and other reptile lovers.

There will be free face painting for the kids and food and drink available for purchase.

For those seeking less of a busy experience, the expo will offer a Quiet Session from 9am to 10am. This session allows early access to the exhibits in a less crowded environment, suitable for those with functional needs. Those interested should email Elizabeth at shikitoscritters@gmail.com for more information.

Expo entry fees are $25 for adults, $5 for children aged 11-15, and free for children under 10. Prices exclude booking fees.
