The Community Place’s popular family event returns this month to celebrate Queensland Child Protection Week with a day full of fun, connection, and a clear message: protecting children is everybody’s business.

Held at Keong Park in Stafford, the Child Protection Week Family Fun Day will take place on Saturday, 13 September, bringing together families, community groups, and local services.

Rebecca Hainsworth from The Community Place said that if child protection was everybody’s business, then it was a community responsibility.

“We can do it better when we have strong connections within our community,” Rebecca said. “So, our goal is to bring our community together in a way that fosters strong connections and facilitates conversations about child protection and our responsibility.”

Now in its third year, the family fun afternoon has become a local favourite. With a free petting zoo, magician, live music, and a sausage sizzle, there’s plenty to keep kids entertained while parents engage with local services and support organisations.

“We think we have hit on a winning formula – it has certainly been successful the previous times, with record crowds at each event,” Rebecca said. “We get the community together through free entertainment for the kids and a sausage sizzle, because there is still a cost-of-living crisis, and everyone needs a break!”

Community Support and Event Details

Queensland Police Service, State Emergency Service, Parentline, KidSafe Queensland, and Pregnancy Counselling Link will be on site, as well as the Primary Health Network (PHN), who will speak about children’s mental health. There will also be local Scouts, church groups, and an appearance from a First Nations author.

Rebecca encouraged families to bring a picnic blanket, settle in, and enjoy the afternoon.

“At our first event, we were expecting maybe 50 people max, so we catered and budgeted for that many,” she said. “To say we were overwhelmed when we ended up with 300 is a bit of an understatement! Last year, we upped our expectations, but we were still surprised when we had our best event ever.

“This year, we have had people saying from the start of the year that the event is in their calendar, and we have had more organisations than ever wanting to be a part of it, so we are looking forward to a bumper event!”
