Kick up your heels this month with Gilly’s Line Dancing at a free event worth hollerin’ about.
The line-dancing action will take place at Royal Quarters in Nundah, where both first-timers and seasoned stompers are invited to hit the floor.
Founder and lead instructor of Gilly’s Line Dancing, Chelsea Gillum, said she was passionate about making her events free and beginner-friendly.
“It’s not just our grandparents doing it anymore, and it’s way more fun than people expect!” Chelsea said. “We get to showcase some pretty amazing line dances, and when people want more, I can link them into local line dance schools closest to them.”
Attendees at the Nundah event can expect to get their boots moving to beginner-level routines like K for Kicks, Copperhead Road, and Love Story, with a few advanced numbers like Raised Like That or Burn It To the Ground thrown in for the fancier foot-workers.
Line Dancing With Chelsea Gillum
“We like it rowdy, so there’s lots of woos and claps for sure!” Chelsea said. “We break all the dances down so everyone will be up dancing. In the dance breaks, though, there will be demonstrations of harder line dances, so if you know any, you can keep dancing. It’s also a time for people to show off some of the advanced line dances.”
Chelsea began line-dancing after attending her first Gympie Muster in 2022, led by award-winning line dancer Chris Watson. She went on to visit Nashville with Chris Watson Travel in June 2023, and had the opportunity to dance at Nashville Palace and the old Wildhorse Saloon.
“I came back with a dream, and man, I pinch myself every day that I am out living that dream right now!” she said.
“What I love is when I’m teaching on stage to a brand-new dancer, and I hear, ‘Oh, I got it!!’ And then seeing people add their own style and flair is awesome.”
She encouraged anyone who might be curious about line-dancing “to give it a stomp”.
“I am also proof that anyone can line dance and that it eventually clicks and becomes one of the greatest surprises, sometimes of your life,” she said.
