Do you know your partner’s ‘love language’?
If you do, it makes giving them the perfect Valentine’s Day gift a whole lot easier!
Love languages were first introduced by Dr Gary Chapman who wrote the book The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate. The book suggests that everyone gives and receives love in different ways which can be broken down into five general categories called love languages.
Understanding Love Language
Someone whose love language is physical touch feels most loved and appreciated when kissing, hugging, holding hands, having sex, or other physical acts of affection. For romantic Valentine’s Day gestures, consider an intimate night either at home or a plush hotel. Focus on your partner by giving them a massage or treat yourselves to a couples massage.
The love language ‘acts of service’ involves performing helpful tasks (without being asked) for your partner to make their life more enjoyable or easier. Think of things like getting their car detailed, cooking a beautiful meal or taking care of all the planning for your Valentine’s Day date.
Quality time as a love language means different things to different people. What makes your partner happiest – is it your full attention without electronic devices, having a night out (or in) together, or enjoying a favourite hobby? Be present at a romantic dinner, on a sunset cruise or exploring an ‘experience’ together such as those on Redballoon.
Those whose love language is words of affirmation express their affection verbally. They themselves feel most appreciated when their partner uses words to express emotions. Write a poem (or find a romantic poem), choose a sentimental Valentine’s Day card, or buy a schmaltzy gift. Whatever you do, ensure there are feelings in writing.
Someone whose love language is gift-giving loves to give gifts as well as receive them. They appreciate the thoughtfulness of any gift they receive. Tangible gifts reaffirm your affection so give a keepsake or piece of jewellery as a permanent reminder of your love.
Give a thoughtful gift that speaks your partner’s love language and you will both have a very happy Valentine’s Day indeed!
