Mount Alvernia College is celebrating 70 years of educating young women.
The Catholic girls’ high school in Kedron will mark the occasion with a 70 Year Garden Party on 8 August for current and former parents and carers, alumni, staff and friends of the college.
Deputy Principal – Staff Development and Organisation, Kerry Jell, said the anniversary was “an opportunity to honour the vision, courage and commitment of the Missionary Franciscan Sisters, educators, students and families who have shaped Mount Alvernia College since 1956”.
“We’ve achieved so much in our first 70 years, and this milestone provides an opportunity to reflect on our rich history, celebrate our community and honour the legacy of those who came before us,” she said.
Celebrating 70 Years of Mount Alvernia
The college began with just 10 students, with its first purpose-built classroom opening in 1957. Enrolments grew during the 1960s, and co-educational classes with brother school Padua College commenced – a partnership that continues today.
The first library opened in 1973, followed by the first musical in 1976.
As enrolments increased, the college expanded its facilities and cultural, sporting and academic programs, while new technologies continued to shape students’ learning experiences.
Since 1993, the college has been led by four lay principals: Professor Lee Anne Perry, Vicki Ward, Dr Kerrie Tuitie and Samantha Jensen.
Today, Mount Alvernia College has close to 1000 students.
“As we celebrate this milestone, we also look forward to the opportunities, achievements and memories that will shape the next 70 years of Mount Alvernia College,” Kerry said.
