Scootaville, a unique charity scooter ride, will hit the road again this month to raise funds for Legacy and the Air Force Association for homeless veterans.
Hosted by registered Chermside West-based charity Radschool Association Inc, which represents the men and women trained in electronics by the Air Force, the two-week fundraising event also allows ex-service personnel to reconnect with the community while bringing attention to the regional towns it visits.
Secretary and treasurer of Radschool Association Inc, Trevor Benneworth, said the ride gave participants the chance “to experience many outback towns, meet heaps of lovely people, and enjoy the freedom of riding a scooter through outback Queensland”.
“We try to include different towns each year,” Trevor said.
Ride for Veterans Begins
This year’s ride will depart Kedron-Wavell in Chermside on 16 August, travelling through Toowoomba, Dalby, Roma, Injune, Emerald, Biloela, Tannum Sands, Bundaberg and Kingaroy before returning to Chermside on 29 August.
Trevor said riders always received a warm welcome along the route, with councils providing overnight accommodation at showgrounds and local RSL clubs supplying meals. He added that the local people were “always so generous” with donations.
Along the way, the group also visits primary schools, handing out showbags to students and giving them a ride on the back of the scooters while sharing information about the Australian Defence Force and Legacy.
As well as fundraising, the event aims to raise awareness of the challenges faced by current and former service personnel.
Trevor said Scootaville was also about mateship and “the ability to talk to their peers about any problems they might have (and) to realise many others share the same problems”.
Since its beginning in 2022, Scootaville has continued to increase the amount it raises each year. In 2025, the event donated $10,250 to Brisbane Legacy, $5000 to Victorian Legacy and $10,000 to the Air Force Association for homeless veterans.
Scootaville currently operates in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria, with plans to expand to Western Australia.
The event is open to both men and women as riders or supporters. Riders require a motorcycle licence, with organisers providing scooters, helmets, jackets, bedding, overnight accommodation and most meals.
