Westfield Chermside is set to become a beacon of eco-fashion and creativity this month as it hosts the No-Waste Wardrobe program, part of this year’s Brisbane Festival.

The four-day event will feature an art installation by Brisbane artist Claudia Williams and interactive school holiday workshops focusing on upcycling and sustainability.

Claudia said her ‘Waste Wardrobe’ embodied the principles of “reuse, remake, rethink” – challenging traditional notions of fashion and sustainability.

“By using recycled fabrics and repurposed materials, I create visually striking garments that convey powerful messages about environmental consciousness and creativity, as well as the impacts of overconsumption,” she said.

“My inspiration is to captivate the audience and encourage them to rethink waste. While the garments I create are not meant for everyday wear, they serve as art statement pieces designed to provoke thought about our consumption habits and the potential for materials to be reused rather than discarded after a single use.”

With more than 25 years of experience in art, Claudia has designed sets for musicals using recycled materials and has crafted large-scale public art installations for communities and councils across Queensland.

At this month’s Brisbane Festival event at Westfield Chermside, she said she would be showcasing a collection of garments and pieces from previous events and editorials.

“For this showcase, I will be adding a few extra elements to these garments, using materials such as recycled refrigeration foil, jewellery and plastics,” she said. “As with all my garments, they can be dismantled and remade, embodying the continuous cycle of reuse and remaking that is central to my work.”

During the festival, Claudia and her team will lead two free, non-ticketed school holiday activities. These workshops will use previously loved clothes donated through dedicated collection points in the centre in partnership with UPPAREL, a company that collects unwanted clothes and up-cycles them into new products.

“Children will explore the concept of upcycling by designing their own outfits and faces using recycled fabrics and various other recycled embellishments,” Claudia said. “These activities are fantastic for encouraging kids to rethink waste, get creative with reuse and learn how materials can be remade into something new and unique.”
