Kids who love swimming and want to try a new sport have an exciting opportunity this month with Vikings Water Polo Inc.
The organisation is offering free Junior Come and Try programs at Chermside Pool, providing a perfect introduction to water polo and a chance to join the Vikings Junior Program.
Jordan Sheterline, a founding and committee member of Vikings Water Polo Inc, said the Come and Try sessions were held before each summer season, but kids could join the program anytime.
“The aim of the Come and Try is to let those who have never tried water polo to come and have a go in a non-competitive environment where their parents can see how water polo can utilise the skills learnt in swimming lessons and open the door to an exciting new experience for their children,” Jordan said.
Participants will learn to keep their legs moving underwater, catch and pass a ball, take shots at the goal and save goals.
Vikings’ Junior Program and Upcoming Competitions
Jordan said the Vikings Juniors Program included the Little Vikings for 8 to 12-year-olds, who were often from a swimming background, and 10 to 17-year-olds, who played in the metropolitan competition according to their ability levels.
“The competition caters for four levels of ability in each age group so there is always one to suit our participants,” he said.
He added that the Vikings’ dedicated and experienced coaches taught new skills and engaged with the teams’ needs.
“They are supported by an active and energetic management committee who create an inclusive, welcoming atmosphere for participants and their families to enjoy,” he said.
The Vikings are also preparing for the Junior Summer Competition run by Water Polo Queensland and will soon hold trials for players from Under 12 to Under 18.
“Kids won’t miss out if they don’t attend the trials – and even if they’ve never played before, no matter what age they are, we would love them to come and have a go at water polo!” Jordan said.
In addition to the Juniors programs, Vikings have launched weekly FunFitLadies sessions, with plans for a FunFitFellas program.
“Both will be open to anyone who would like to do some exercise, or play a sport and have lots of fun doing it,” Jordan said.
The free Junior Come and Try sessions will be held on Saturday, 7 September, Saturday, 14 September and Sunday, 15 September at Chermside Pool.
