Multi-award-winning author Pamela Rushby will provide insights into the research that informed her latest historical novel, Those Girls, when she visits Chermside Library this month.

As part of the Brisbane City Council’s free Lord Mayor’s Writers in Residence series, Pamela will delve into how she brought the story of the Australian Women’s Land Army to life.

Pamela said she would discuss those “golden moments” when something incredible turns up in the research and how she selects and weaves those elements into her narrative.

“I don’t usually go looking for topics to write about, I kind of trip over them – might be something I read, something in a museum or exhibition,” Pamela said. “In this case, I saw a photograph of Land Girls in the Stockman’s Hall of Fame at Longreach and thought, ‘That’s interesting!’ and had to find out more about them. They were just amazing!”

Unveiling Research Insights for Those Girls at Chermside Library

Author Pamela Rushby will appear at Chermside Library this month.

Those Girls follows 16-year-old Hilly, who joins the Land Army in 1942. She confronts the harsh realities of farm life in Queensland while forging lasting friendships.

Although aimed at a middle-grade and young adult (YA) audience, Pamela said her books also attracted adults interested in local history.

“I love sharing fascinating, lesser-known stories from history,” she said. “They’re often better than fiction! And often, people in the audience can add to the story from their own experiences or family histories.”
