Butterflies, blooms and decades of friendship recently took centre stage as the Stafford Garden Club celebrated its 60th anniversary.

The milestone event occurred at The OES Hall in Kedron, where members, neighbouring garden clubs, and community groups gathered to share their love of gardening and enjoy lunch.

President Janelle Winterflood said the theme of the celebration was “butterflies in the garden”.

“Queensland horticulturist Paul Plant was our guest speaker on the topic,” Janelle said, adding that the hall was decorated with “overhead garlands adorned in butterflies and flower vases with paper butterflies floating above, and butterfly cakes for dessert.”

Founded in 1965 by the Vicar of St Clement’s Anglican Church Stafford, the club began with a small group exchanging gardening tips and plants. As it grew, the club moved venues before settling in its current Kedron location in 1987.

Over the years, members have contributed to the community by planting at local schools, participating in Arbor Day, and fundraising for charities. A notable member was life member Daphne Jones, who sadly passed away last year after 50 years with the club.

The Club’s Legacy and Future

Now boasting around 80 members, the club hosts events such as the Garden Rambles, New Members Bash, and an annual Gardener of the Year award.

Janelle said the Stafford Garden Club was proud to be a vibrant group providing socialisation and support through a common interest in gardening.

“Our one constant aim has been to keep things fresh and introduce different concepts,” she said.

Regular meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month between February and November. For more information, email staffordgardenclub@gmail.com
