A free, eight-week program designed to engage and support at-risk youth will kick off this month, offering 13 to 18-year-olds activities like 3×3 basketball, soccer, boxfit and pickleball.
Take It to the Streets, led by MADE Concepts Pty and funded by the Queensland Government, DTS and the Queensland Police, will be held at Stafford City Shopping Centre each Thursday between 8 May to 26 June.
MADE Concepts Pty Program Lead Deola D’brown said the program provided a safe space for young people to develop life skills and receive support from mentors.
“Many at-risk youth struggle with confidence, social isolation and limited access to positive activities and resources,” Deola said.
“Evidence shows that when disengaged or at-risk young people are engaged through developmental community programs and given the tools to impact their behaviour, their risk of reoffending or leaving school reduces.
“Sports provide a fun and inclusive way for young people to build confidence, develop teamwork skills and stay active. They create a sense of belonging and purpose while offering a positive outlet for energy and emotions.”
Confidence, Connection and Community Impact
The travelling program has seen positive results, with less confident kids becoming more engaged and others stepping into leadership roles.
“One standout moment was a quiet participant gaining enough confidence to grab the mic and MC an event – something they never thought they’d do!” Deola said. “We also see this during the community debate session, a component that promotes public speaking and confidence. We have also seen some participants transcend into playing regular club and school sports.
“Whether it’s stepping out of their comfort zone, forming friendships, or finding a passion for sport, our goal is to empower them with skills they can carry beyond the program, motivated intrinsically, so they can continue to spur themselves on and inspire the next generation while connecting to incredible pathways that connect to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.”
Participants can also win prizes through the Street Cred incentive. Those who attend all eight sessions at one location will enter into a draw to design and win a custom pair of shoes.
Deola said they kept engagement in the program high by fostering an environment where kids enjoy the experiences and feel a sense of belonging.
“This sees a lot of return participants coming back with more friends and family,” he said.
