If you are planning on getting a pet for Christmas, then it might be worth having a chat with an expert about which animal is right for you.
Silver Lining Pet Rescue has teamed up with PetO in Virginia to host an Adopt a Pet Day this month, giving families the chance to meet cats and dogs in need of a loving home.
The event aims to raise awareness about the importance of adoption while helping animals find their forever families.
Denise Bettany from Silver Lining Pet Rescue said adoption days were for pets they have in care from private surrenders or from pounds.
“PetO and other pet stores recognise the struggle rescue teams have with finding homes for our little ones,” Denise said. “These adoption days offer us a chance to take our pets to meet people and hopefully match up.
“We can only bring pets that can cope with the environment, so any who have anxiety or are naughty with other animals – we don’t bring them.”
Important Considerations Before Adopting
With Christmas approaching, Denise urged families to carefully consider the responsibilities of pet ownership.
“If you’re thinking about bringing home a puppy or kitten, factor in the costs of microchipping, vaccinations and desexing,” she said. “When you adopt rescue pets, all of this is included in one fee.
“Families should also consider whether they have appropriate fencing to contain pets and whether they have time for a pet.
“Leaving a pet alone for extended periods isn’t good for them. Speak to the rescue team or research breeds and their needs.”
Denise said smaller breeds tended to be adopted more quickly, leaving larger pets waiting longer for homes.
“The rescue world is struggling with the number of pets needing help,” she said. “Many people don’t desex their pets, leading to unwanted litters.”
Silver Lining relies on carers, but the rising living costs make it difficult to find enough volunteers. Despite the challenges, Denise said she remained hopeful.
“We don’t rehome other people’s pets on our adoption days,” she said. “We need to rehome the ones we have in care to make room for the others waiting.
“In an ideal world, every pet would be cared for throughout their life. Until then, we’ll keep helping as many as we can – because every pet deserves their silver lining.”
