The summer holidays are the perfect time to explore nature and enjoy festive activities at Downfall Creek Bushland Centre. From bugs and beetles to active play, there’s plenty to keep the kids entertained.
Environment, Parks and Sustainability Chair and McDowall Ward Councillor Tracy Davis said this year’s Christmas holiday program was all about inspiring curiosity and connection through nature-based activities.
“Downfall Creek Environment Centre will be at the heart of our fun, free and affordable events for kids these Christmas holidays,” Cr Davis said. “Brisbane is Australia’s lifestyle capital, and this Christmas, we’re helping families make memories with hands-on holiday experiences that spark curiosity and connection.
“One of the highlights is the 12 Days of Christmas – Christmas Beetle Craft, where kids can meet Brisbane’s favourite festive visitor up close.
“Families can also join the 12 Days of Christmas – Meet Your Wildlife Neighbours sessions to discover the frogs, lizards, birds and mammals that share our city.
“Our wildlife experts bring every session to life, helping kids learn, explore and connect with nature outdoors.”
Christmas Beetle Craft and Learn
On Tuesday, 16 December, from 10am to 11am, kids aged seven and up can discover the shiny beetles that appear each Christmas, explore ways to support wildlife through the iNaturalist app, and enjoy some beetle crafting.
Meet Wildlife Neighbours
On Wednesday, 17 December, the environment centre will introduce children of all ages to native Australian animals, including amphibians, reptiles, mammals and birds. It’s a fun opportunity to learn more about the creatures that share our backyards and how to support them. Choose between a 10am or 11am session.
Bug Detectives
On Thursday, 18 December, from 10am to 11am, budding entomologists aged five and over can join a bug show and test their detective skills on a short walk to investigate insects and their habitats.
Bazil Grumble – Fast, Fun and Funky Christmas
On Friday, 19 December from 10am to 12pm, children aged four to 17 can take part in a range of festive games, including limbo, musical statues and other groovy challenges. It’s a chance to burn off some energy and have some fun.
With a mix of wildlife exploration, festive fun and hands-on activities, Downfall Creek Bushland Centre offers a summer holiday program that aims to spark curiosity, inspire adventure and create lasting memories.
