Around 70 students from four local schools have helped create a colourful community mural to be installed in the new underpass in Fitzgibbon as part of the Beams Road upgrade.

Brisbane City Council announced last month that stage 1B of the upgrade was complete, widening Beams Road from two to four lanes between Carselgrove Avenue and Handford Road.

Bracken Ridge Ward Councillor Sandy Landers said she was “especially pleased local children have helped put their mark on this project, with their artwork soon on display for the entire community to enjoy.”

Students from St Flannan’s Catholic Primary School, Taigum State School, Holy Spirit College and Koobara Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Kindergarten and Preschool worked with artists Simon De Groot, Ally Cassidy and Shiarna Wilson during workshops in June to develop designs for the mural.

Titled Playful Transformations, the mural features bright colours, bold shapes and designs inspired by the students’ ideas. Preparation and painting took just under three weeks, with the mural designed to be a lasting feature of the underpass.

Stage 1B of the Beams Road upgrade links the pedestrian and cycling underpass to the Cabbage Tree Creek Bikeway. It also includes two upgraded bus stops, improved shared paths, more than 3,500 tonnes of asphalt and 11,700 native plants.

The first stage of the upgrade between Cowie Road and Balcara Avenue opened in early 2025.
