Storm season is on its way, so now is the time to look around your home and tackle those jobs you’ve been putting off. A little preparation now can help protect your home when heavy rain and strong winds arrive.
Start with the gutters and roof
Leaves, sticks and debris can block gutters and downpipes, stopping rainwater from flowing away properly. Clear them and check that the downpipes are free from blockages. Check the roof for damaged or missing tiles, loose sheets, deteriorating flashing or other problems that could become worse during a storm. If you’re not comfortable getting on the roof, it’s time to call in a local professional.
Trim trees and secure loose items
Have dead or overhanging branches removed if they could come down in strong winds, but don’t attempt to cut branches close to power lines yourself. Outdoor furniture, umbrellas, pot plants, trampolines and other loose items can also become dangerous in high winds, so decide where they can be stored or secured before a storm approaches.
Check your drainage
Clear leaves, dirt and other debris from stormwater drains around your property so water can flow freely during heavy rain. If water regularly pools around your home, consider getting a drainage expert in to assess whether any improvements could be made.
Do a walk around
Check that outdoor structures, gates, fences and sheds are secure and look for anything else that could become a problem in heavy rain or strong winds. It’s much easier to fix a loose panel or move a heavy pot before bad weather draws in.
Prepare for a power outage
Keep torches, spare batteries, a battery-powered radio, first-aid supplies, essential medications and drinking water somewhere easy to reach. Make sure your phone power bank is charged and, if you have an electric garage door, know how to operate it manually.
Finally, check your home insurance is up to date and make sure you understand what your policy covers.
Storm season is part of life, but a little preparation can make it easier to manage. Taking care of these jobs while the weather is calm means you can head into the summer months knowing you’ve done all you can to prepare your home and your family for whatever the season brings.
