Families can enjoy fun activities, local support, and expert advice on caring for young children at a First 5 Forever Early Years Expo this month.

The free expo will be held at Chermside Library on Friday, 15 May, and will include a performance by Happy Singing Kids.

Creator of Happy Singing Kids, Susanna O’Leary, said families could expect a joyful music experience where children sing, move and actively participate.

“The session blends storytelling, actions, and catchy songs to support early literacy, confidence, and connection while making it genuinely fun for both children and their caregivers,” Susanna said.

How Music and Play Support Early Childhood Development

First 5 Forever is a family literacy program designed to strengthen language and literacy environments for children from birth to five years.

“Happy Singing Kids closely aligns with First 5 Forever by supporting early literacy through playful and meaningful interactions with children,” Susanna said. “The focus is on building strong foundations in language, connection, and confidence – using music as an accessible and engaging tool families can continue using at home.

“Music is a powerful way to engage children in learning through play and song. Play-based activities keep children motivated, involved, and uplifted. Music activates multiple areas of the brain, including language, memory, movement, and emotion, making learning both effective and memorable. In the early years, rhythm and repetition help children absorb language patterns, expand vocabulary, and build confidence in communication.”
