This National Reconciliation Week, Aunty Rhonda Collard-Spratt and Jacki Ferro invite families to explore Australian animals through Aboriginal Dreamtime storytelling.
The free event will be held at Chermside Library on 30 May.
Jacki will perform a puppet show while Aunty Rhonda reads from the Spirit of the Dreaming series, with her artwork shown on screen.
“Our shows immerse you in Aboriginal culture,” Jacki said. “We share ancient teachings that are still relevant today, and we work together in the true spirit of Reconciliation.
“Children learn about Australian animals that they may never have heard of. We include endangered animals, as well as the favourites like kangaroos and emus…and the special connection Aboriginal people have with them.”
Sharing Culture Through Storytelling, Music and Connection
Children can sing and dance along while learning about kindness and helpfulness.
“They laugh, especially at the farting quokkas, and they understand the importance of including everyone in our play and taking care of people and animals in need,” Jacki said. “After the show, all the children want to give Aunty Rhonda a big hug!”
Jacki said it was a privilege to sit beside Aunty Rhonda.
“We’ve been on this journey together for over a decade, yet I learn something new about her life as an Aboriginal person and a survivor of the Stolen Generations every time we perform,” she said. “I also feel a much stronger spiritual connection to our beautiful country because of all she has taught me.”
