Ombra Italian Chermside is quietly redefining what local dining can be, pairing handmade pasta with a warm, community-driven approach that keeps locals coming back for more.

Conveniently located on Gympie Road, the boutique cafe has quickly earned a reputation as one of Brisbane’s standout pasta spots, recently securing a nomination for the Australian Restaurant and Caterers Association’s “New Restaurant of the Year” Award. Despite the recognition, the focus remains simple: good food, made with care, and shared in a relaxed setting.

At the heart of Ombra Italian is a commitment to craftsmanship.

Owner Daniel Strange said that nearly everything on the menu is made in-house, from fresh pasta and slow-cooked sauces to desserts prepared daily.

“The offering is intentionally small and seasonal, evolving regularly to reflect the best available produce,” Daniel said.

This ever-changing approach ensures no two visits feel exactly the same, while maintaining the consistent quality and flavour the venue has become known for.

A Welcoming Local Favourite

The experience is deliberately unfussy. Ombra Italian leans away from formal dining, instead offering a space that feels easy and welcoming. Guests can expect a casual atmosphere, friendly service and a BYO model that encourages diners to settle in and stay awhile.

“It’s the kind of place you go when you don’t really feel like going out, but still want something genuinely good,” Daniel said.

The venue’s charm extends beyond dinner service. From Monday to Friday, the space transforms into a daytime café, serving coffee, handmade cakes, fresh sandwiches and house-made pasta options between 10am and 1pm. It’s become a go-to for locals seeking a relaxed mid-morning catch-up or an easy lunch.

More than just a restaurant, Ombra Italian has built its identity around connection. The small, passionate team has created a space where conversation flows easily, and guests feel like part of the neighbourhood.

“It’s about keeping things personal,” Daniel said. “We want people to feel comfortable, whether they’re dining in, grabbing a coffee or picking up takeaway.”

With its blend of authenticity, simplicity and flavour, Ombra Italian Chermside offers a dining experience that feels both elevated and refreshingly real — a local gem built on good food and genuine hospitality.
