Keith Payne VC Park in Stafford has received a major upgrade and will officially open this month.

The Lutana Street park now features more shade, improved amenities and a brand-new playground, creating a more enjoyable space for locals.

Marchant Ward Councillor Danita Parry said the idea for the upgrade came when a local resident, Sara, contacted her about improving the playground for children and providing more seating for parents and carers.

“For many nearby households, particularly families living in apartments, this park is their main outdoor space,” Cr Parry said.

“I’m so pleased that after months of planning, design and construction, the playground at Keith Payne VC Park has now been upgraded to better support local residents and families.

“New play equipment, a shade sail and a brand-new toilet block have made the park more practical, more comfortable and, most importantly, more fun for everyone who uses it.”

Sara said the community around Keith Payne Park were thrilled with the upgrades.

“Families often head to the park after school and there was a general consensus among parents that it was really time for an update,” Sara said.

“I contacted Danita at the council to share our community’s ideas. I was thrilled with how quickly she responded and involved the community in the process.

“I know I don’t just speak for my own family, but for many of us who are regular visitors to the park, the upgrade has been fantastic. All new equipment and small changes, like more seating close to the playground, have made such a practical and meaningful difference.

“We’re really looking forward to many more afternoons spent at the park, mingling with neighbours and continuing to build our community.”

Construction commenced last year following a community planning process.

“Thank you to everyone who contributed to the park planning and visioning process through our online survey and community planning session,” Cr Parry said. “Your ideas have helped deliver a fabulous new space for our community to enjoy.

“Projects like the Keith Payne VC Park upgrade are a reminder of what can be achieved when communities speak up and work together.”

Honouring a Hero: The Legacy of Keith Payne VC

The park is named in honour of Victoria Cross recipient, Vietnam War hero and former Stafford local, Keith Payne VC AM, and includes a memorial recognising his service and legacy. Keith was one of Australia’s most decorated soldiers, awarded the Victoria Cross for exceptional bravery in Vietnam. He later became an advocate for veterans’ welfare and was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia.

Details of the official opening will be shared on Cr Parry’s Facebook page.
