Chermside Library is hosting a free workshop this month for anyone interested in learning about native stingless bees.

The free workshop will be held on Saturday, 21 March, and will feature entomologist and professional educator Dr Tim Heard, who will introduce attendees to the basics of how to become a stingless beekeeper.

Dr Heard said the workshop was aimed at beginners of all ages, but those with an intermediate level of knowledge could also gain some tips and ask questions.

“People will take away an improved knowledge of how to look after native bees, but also will gain insights into the intricacies of the natural world, even in our suburbs,” he said.

Safe and Sustainable: Why Stingless Bees are Perfect for Your Backyard

Dr Heard has been keeping Australian native stingless bees since 1985, when he transferred his first hive from a cut-down tree into a wooden box. He said stingless bees are important to the local environment because they pollinate a wide range of plants, including native plants and garden fruits and vegetables.

“Pollination helps plants to produce healthy seeds,” he said.

“Stingless bees are ideal for suburban backyards, as they are totally safe around humans and our pets, and they thrive in these situations. Keeping them is easy, but it pays to learn a little bit about them.”
