Kevin Bloody Wilson has never been known for subtlety, and he won’t be starting now.
The comedian and singer-songwriter will bring his Aussie Icon Tour to Kedron-Wavell next month, joined by his daughter and fellow comedian Jenny Talia.
Kevin said he was looking forward to the tour because he loved testing out new songs and seeing the audience’s reactions.
“But playing everyone’s old favourites never gets old,” he said. “The sing-alongs of my older songs seem to just get louder every year.”
Kevin’s career began with a homemade cassette tape, drawing on his experiences living in the Outback, working as an electrician in the Kalgoorlie mines by day and a musician by night. The tape sold tens of thousands of copies before being transferred to vinyl, where it achieved similar success.
More than 40 years after the release of his first album, Kevin is still touring internationally, and he said he still loves what he does.
“Probably more now than I ever did,” he said. “I don’t fish or play golf. This is what I do in my spare time anyway. Getting the guitar out, writing and playing new songs. Best job in the bloody world!”
Like Father, Like Daughter: Jenny Talia Joins the Family Business
Daughter Jenny Talia will be first on stage each night of the tour to perform her musical parodies.
“We are one big family out on the road – my wife Betty handles all the behind-the-scenes business, and my Kiwi crew have been with me for twenty plus years,” Kevin said. “So, sharing the stage with Jen every night is such a buzz. Her energy is contagious. She’s a little bit mental…obviously she gets that from her mother.”
Jenny began her career as a country singer, but shifted to comedy after the success of her first comedy album, which outsold her three country albums in two months. She released her 10th album last year and said her creative process starts with collecting ideas on her phone.
“When it’s time for a new album, I grab my guitar and see which of those work in a song,” she said. “Usually, Mum and Dad hear the song first. If Mum’s mortified and beer comes out of Dad’s nose, I know I have a winner.”
After performing in the US, UK, New Zealand and South Africa, Jenny said she loved Australian audiences because “there’s no BS”.
“If it’s not funny, they’re not gonna sugarcoat it,” she said. “But if it is funny, no one goes off and responds better than a hometown crowd.
“Watching people double over laughing in the audience is the biggest buzz/reward. There’s no other feeling like it!”
