The Latin Choir Brisbane, based in Kedron, has been nominated and received a special mention at the Latin American Awards Australia.
Founded in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, the intergenerational multicultural community choir has grown substantially over the years and welcomes people from all walks of life.
Choir president Denise Nogueira said that the nomination at the Latin American Awards “means we are contributing to the wellbeing of our society”.
“When we received the special honourable mention, from a jury composed of members of the wider community, we realised our voices are going far and are touching the hearts and minds of many more,” Denise said.
Building Community Through Music
Singing in Spanish, Portuguese and English, the group faces a busy second semester ahead, with performances in multicultural events and new songs added to their repertoire.
“I would like to take this opportunity to invite people to come to a rehearsal to have a taste of what it is like to be part of this diverse and dynamic group,” Denise said. “Everyone is welcome to join the choir.”
The choir is led by experienced conductors Tania Balil and Sergio Amaro, who guide the group through new songs and live performances. Both musicians share a passion for Latin culture and aim to foster a welcoming environment for aspiring singers.
“Singing in a group deeply enriches the sense of belonging, identity, and the ability to be among others,” Sergio said. “This becomes evident in the Latin Choir when people attend for the first time and encounter a spark, an embrace, a smile that renews their vitality and sense of belonging.”
He said the choir was looking for more male voices, with or without choir experience, who felt that they could contribute to the dark-voice section.
“They can come from any background, but they should be interested in singing primarily in Portuguese and Spanish,” Sergio said.
A member of the group since January 2023, Anne Grimes highlighted the camaraderie and joy she gets from singing with locals and participants from all over the world.
“I love learning the rhythms, sounds and stories from so many Latin countries via song,” Anne said. “I always leave rehearsal uplifted; it is the most wonderful feeling to sing in harmony with others.”
