Mia Congram, a local film student and Chermside Guide writer-photographer, has claimed the Best Documentary award in the 18-25 category at the 13th Annual Ipswich Film Festival for Youth (IFFY).
Her winning documentary, Legacy: A Katie Noonan Story, was entirely created by Mia – directing, filming, writing, and editing the piece herself.
The documentary chronicles the life and career of the multi-award-winning singer, composer and producer, Katie Noonan, renowned as the frontwoman of the band george, as well as her successful solo career.
“Through interviews with Katie herself, and those who know her best, the film explores how Katie redefined what it means to be a female artist,” Mia said. “The film portrays Katie’s journey from a young girl in Brisbane to a trailblazer in the Australian music industry.”
The documentary features appearances from Katie Noonan, classical guitarist Karin Schaupp, female community choir, Pitchface, and voiceovers by Katie Samios.
A Passion for Storytelling
Mia said this was her first major film work.
“The documentary was filmed down in Melbourne earlier this year,” she said. “It was my first solo trip anywhere, and a very exciting experience.
“There was a very short turnaround in production times, having less than a week for pre-production, and a day for filming. I luckily had a couple months to edit, though.”
Mia first studied film in high school. She is currently studying a Bachelor of Education (Secondary)/Bachelor of Creative Arts (Film) at QUT.
She said she was “honestly quite surprised” her documentary won the IFFY award, “especially amongst so many other amazing entries”.
“I feel quite honoured to have won this award and am extremely grateful for all the people who supported me along the way,” she said.
“I fell in love with film, thanks to my Year 11 and Year 12 film teacher; she really inspired me to pursue a career within the arts.
“The film was inspired by Katie’s life story and her passion for supporting young women within the creative arts.
“I’m grateful to have worked with such an inspiring artist and am excited for what the future holds.”
