PCYC Zillmere is offering a range of free programs designed to support young people in Brisbane’s north through employment training, driver education and recreational activities.
The programs target youth aged 12 to 19 and aim to address common barriers to employment, education, and social connection. All sessions are free to attend.
A key initiative is Get Set for Work, a 10-week program for 15- to 19-year-olds delivered under the Queensland Government’s Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative. The course helps young people build skills, gain qualifications, and develop confidence to enter the workforce or pursue further education. It runs four times a year, roughly in line with school terms.
Sophia Walker, Program Coordinator – Get Set For Work, said, “At PCYC Zillmere, there is always something awesome happening for the youth in our community.
“And all these programs are of no cost to participants.”
Building Skills, Confidence and Community
The centre also runs Braking the Cycle, a volunteer mentoring program for learner drivers aged 16 and over who don’t have access to a vehicle or supervising driver. Mentors help participants gain their required logbook hours and build safe driving habits – a step that can be crucial for employment and independence.
For younger participants, PCYC Zillmere offers weekly Drop-In Boxing sessions on Wednesdays from 4pm to 5pm. Open to those aged 12 to 18, the sessions focus on fitness, confidence, and mental wellbeing in a supportive environment.
Another program, After Dark Basketball, provides a safe space for 12 to 18 year olds to stay active and social after hours.
“Each session includes a relaxed game of basketball followed by a shared meal, creating a space where young people can connect, stay active, and feel supported,” Sophia said.
